Moray (Elginshire) / Illegitimate Birth
« on: Sunday 18 March 18 15:09 GMT (UK)  »
My paternal grandmother Jessie Robertson Keir was the illegitimate daughter of Jane Robertson.

She was born 7th feb 1866 in Boharm, Elgin. In the register she is entered as Jessie Robertson and only her mother's name Jane Robertson is entered.

In the marriage register to Robert Littlejohn 2nd July 1891 she calls herself Jessie Keir and her father is entered as William Keir a farmer. William Keir and Jane Robertson never married.

On her death certificate William Keir is entered as her reputed father.

Sadly her daughter Ida died on her eighth birthday in Jan 1909 and my father was born in March the same year.

Jessie was found dead on Christmas day that year on the shore in Lossiemouth due to drowning.

I have found a possible William Keir on the 1861 & 1871 censuses in Boharm and just wondered if Jessie was allowed to take his surname without his permission or would she have had to go through the courts

Australia / William Henry PHILLIPS
« on: Monday 24 April 17 17:48 BST (UK)  »
I would love to have a copy of the will of my ancestor William Henry Phillips who died in Kallista 10/5/1971.

The grant was 7/7/1971. I thought I could look at it online as there is a book symbol next to the entry  but it doesn't open.

The reference on the Victoria government site is 722/391.

I have a copy of his death certificate but can't find when he emigrated from England with his wife Ida Kate.

Oxfordshire / John Burrows Rose
« on: Monday 23 January 17 17:06 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to help a friend solve his brick wall.

He would like to link his ancestor George with an Edward Rose an attorney who was married to Ann Burrows. Because a number of following generations had a second Christian name of Burrows this is quite feasable.

John Burrows Rose was born in 1798 and was a spirit merchant and landlord of two inns on the Thames namely The Old Barge and the Admiral Vernon.

He had an older brother George Burrows Rose who was a Captain in the 69th cavalry.

I cannot find a baptism for either of them but know their parents were George Rose & Mary Tandy.

There is another generation back before Edward & Ann and the only child of theirs that I can find anything about is Phyllis born in Thame in 1731.

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Luke Maudsley baptism
« on: Tuesday 26 April 16 16:27 BST (UK)  »
I have a look up request for the Maudsley family on the Lancashire board and have got as far as Luke Maudsley born in Ingleton, N Yorkshire 13 Nov 1803.

He has a brother William born 8 Sept 1802. Their father is given as Henry.

I would love to know who both his parents were and have searched all the main genealogy sites with no luck.

Does anyone know if there is anywhere else I could search please?

Lancashire Lookup Requests / George Maudsley
« on: Monday 18 April 16 21:14 BST (UK)  »
I have just received the marriage certificate for George Maudsley & Emma Markey. They married at Manchester Register Office 25th May 1901. His father was Luke Maudsley deceased.

George was a widower aged 40 so he would have been born about 1861. His occupation was a screw & bolt maker. His address is given as 103. Back Cropper Street which is in Collyhurst, Manchester.
This is Emma's address on the 1901 census.

I cannot find him on any census or his birth or previous marriage. Can't find Luke either.

Would love to find him with his first wife or living with his parents.

Durham / Mary Hannah Dean
« on: Tuesday 03 November 15 18:22 GMT (UK)  »
I started this thread on the Lancashire forum before I found the family in Stockton on Tees.

My big mystery is finding Mary Hannah Dean's baptism and where she is prior to her marriage.

She married Henry Morrison in Stockton 15 Aug 1877 and her father was James Dean, a Contractor.
I have the marriage certificate.

She was Henry's first wife and died 12 Aug 1879 aged 24 yrs and is buried in Oxbridge Cemetery, Stockton.

I had hoped to find her on the 1861/1871 censuses possibly with her parents.

Would love to trace her line back further.

Lancashire / Where is Grandfather Morrison?
« on: Saturday 10 October 15 11:56 BST (UK)  »
I have just received the marriage cert for John James Morrison & Ethel Tait.

They were married at St Hilda's Parish Church, Old Trafford on 12th April 1914. He was 35, a Bachelor Occupation Manager. residence 80, Humphrey Street. His father is Henry Morrison an Engineer.

I have been able to trace Ethel through the censuses and found her birth.

But no trace of John James or Henry on any census and cannot find a birth/baptism for John James either.

I don't even know if he was born in Lancashire but as his date of birth was about 1879 I would have expected to find him in the 1881 census living with his parents.

Any suggestions please.

Lancashire / Marriage Brick Wall
« on: Wednesday 09 September 15 20:51 BST (UK)  »
I have been looking for ages for a marriage of James Brown & Ellen Bibby.
The only possibility was at St Oswald in Winwick but on the Lancashire Parish Clerks site the bride is Alice not Ellen It says the banns were called on the3rd, 17th & 24th Sept 1797.

I found a marriage entry on Ancestry for 1st October 1797 for James &  Ellen.

Is there any way I can look at the banns as the transcription says they were both of the parish of Winwick.

James died in Handforth, Cheshire in 1839 & Ellen also in Handforth in 1849. They are both buried at St Peter's Prestbury.
If this is my Ellen she would have been 16 at the time of the marriage.

Unless one or both of them were born in Winwick I don't understand why they would travel from Hanforth to Winwick to marry.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Dawson Marriage
« on: Wednesday 17 June 15 21:53 BST (UK)  »
Looking for a marriage between Isaac Dawson & Mary Somers. I have drawn a blank with all obvious online research sites.

He was born in Rainow, Macclesfield in 1816 the son of John & Milly Dawson.  Mary was born in Besford, Worcestershire and I can't find a baptism for her.

Their first child Esther was born in Bollington in 1844.

I would be grateful for any help please.
