The Common Room / BMD index
« on: Monday 03 March 08 22:32 GMT (UK)  »
Is it possible to search free BMD index using a womans maiden name.  The marriage would have probably been sometime in 1940's.  The lady in question is Margaret Gilham my cousin.  She was born in 1925 in West Ham area, I have found her birth on there but when I try to find marriage it only comes up with the ones that became Gilhams after marriage.

We believe her husbands christian name may have been Douglas but no idea of surname.

The Common Room / obituary in parish magazine
« on: Saturday 23 February 08 16:55 GMT (UK)  »
I wasn't sure where to put this but hope its ok in here.

I have an obituary for my grandmother written in St Phillips, Plaistow parish magazine, its on two photocopied pages and on rereading it today I realised that there are obituaries for two other people.

The names are Harry Howard died November 18th 1935 in his 83rd year, father of Mrs James Jarret.

John Holder died November 16th 1935 no age given for this one but he did have a wife and children.

If this rings a bell with anyone i would be happy to scan and send the whole obituary.

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / 1851 census look up please
« on: Friday 22 February 08 22:47 GMT (UK)  »
I am searching for my great grandmother Harriet Bailey she was born in Holbeach in 1843.  I have found BMD entry but can't find her parents from that so thought maybe they could be found in 1851 census.

There is a possibility she could have been born in March which I believe to be in Cambridgeshire but close to the border of Lincolnshire.

Any help would be appreciated.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Trying to find a marriage completed
« on: Sunday 17 February 08 18:19 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find a marriage for John and Mary Claridge.  Their son Daniel was baptised in 1812 at All Saints, Wandsworth  which I thought was London but it appears to be Surrey. There are other children baptised their with it looks like the same parents starting in 1803 and finishing 1814.

In 1841 census there is a John and Mary, John age 70 and Mary age 65 it states that John was not born in Surrey but Mary was.

By 1851 Mary is widowed age 78 and lodging at the Horse and Groom Wandsworth.

I am also trying to find Johns birth and I would think he was born in the London area.

This information was given to me by other Roots Chatters for which I am very grateful. They suggested I post this on the Surrey board but I see Wandsworth is covered by this one.

Any help would be apppreciated.

The Common Room / At what point do you stop
« on: Thursday 14 February 08 21:02 GMT (UK)  »
I have gone back to Daniel Claridge born in 1812, I have his baptism entry with his parents as John and Mary Claridge but now have no idea where to go.  I can't find an entry for their marriage so don't know date of birth of John to identify him.

Daniel was baptised at All Saints in Wandsworth so i have been looking at Johns around that sort of area.

Ideas anyone?

The Common Room / addresses
« on: Saturday 02 February 08 18:51 GMT (UK)  »
Is there any way of finding out the inhabitants of an address during 1954?  My brother stayed with relatives in Rainham for the summer when my mum was convalessing, he can remember the address and their first names but not the surname.

I would be grateful if anyone could make great aunt Alice a bit clearer as her face seems to be fading away.  If you fancy giving her a bit of colour too that would be great.  Thanks.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / scanning help please
« on: Wednesday 23 January 08 17:55 GMT (UK)  »
I have read the tutorial but I don't get any pictures the same as the ones given on instructions.

I am fairly new to computing and totally new to scanning so if my questions seem ridiculous or obvious please be patient with me as I am frustrated enough with myself for not being able to grasp this technology and followwhat seem to be simple instructions.

My scanner is PC Line PCL-3000, I had it as a christmas present so I never got to ask questions in the shop (wouldn't have known what to ask anyway).  It says it scans up to 600x1200 dpi.  The instructions with it were for only installation purposes, I hunted through the packaging for an operational booklet then realised it comes in the form of help package on pc.

From what I can gather the settings get changed in something called Twain but  can't seem to find it.  It is beginning to feel like never the Twain shall I meet.  I have kept my sense of humour so far and with help from China managed to get pictures posted for some lovely restores.

So I send out a  plea for help( dummy type instructions please).
