World War Two / Canadian WW2 Uniform/Service No
« on: Friday 11 September 09 11:00 BST (UK)  »
What can I find out from a name and a service number, or is there only limited information available?

Pte Ronald Wallace Chambers H20964.

And is there anywhere I can identify what the uniform would be like? As i have a picture and I am unsure if it is him. (I have not scanned it in yet as I was only given it yesterday)

Thanks

Tracey

Having just found a record for a missing war bride; Jessie SLORACH b 1927, I'm trying to find out as much as possible about what happened to her after she left Glasgow.

She married Ronald Wallace CHAMBERS (b 1924) in 1945 in Glasgow.

I don't have a FindMyPast sub, so can't look up the war bride passenger lists, so would really appreciate it if someone has a spare few minutes to look up Jessie CHAMBERS.

Is there any way I can look online for their deaths (in the last 20 years so very recent) as I am trying to figure where in Canada they moved.

Any help is appreciated.

Regards

Tracey

With all the media interest in the anniversary of the start of WW2, it got me thinking, and I've started looking into a couple of areas of family history that I had put on the back burner, directly related to wartime events.

Am I the only one who is so easily distracted/led by the media? I was looking into another area of my family entirely!!

I've also noticed more WW2 threads on here in the past week or so.

Or am I imagining it and just noticing the WW2 threads more?

Lanarkshire / Wartime Marriage - Slorach COMPLETE
« on: Thursday 03 September 09 13:37 BST (UK)  »
I wont post exact details as this is such recent history. However both parties are now deceased, as is anyone else that could remember.

Is there any way of looking up a marriage that occurred sometime between 1942 and 1946?

I don't know the husbands name, except that he was a Canadian airman. It was a church wedding in Glasgow (I have the name of the church but not to hand (at the bottom of a massive pile of notes!). The brides surname was Slorach.

Many Thanks

Armagh / Donaldsons of Armagh
« on: Friday 17 July 09 15:37 BST (UK)  »
I'm actually searching high and low for the birth details of Robert Donaldson (b 1791) reputedly somewhere in Armagh. I believe his father is William Donaldson (b abt 1774), but so far only have other trees to go on so I'm taking it with a pinch of salt...

Robert was a weaver and married Margaret Thomson in Glasgow in 1812, and they went on to have several children.

Is anyone else researching this family?
Has anyone any bright ideas on where I could look, as others seem to have made the link!?!

The Lighter Side / Birth Registrations... a Rant...
« on: Thursday 14 May 09 16:32 BST (UK)  »
I'm a bit annoyed, so please excuse me for letting off some steam in here..

To cut a long and complicated story short, My partner's nephew has recently become a father.... and he wants to be a full on committed father but the mother has left him... nobody else is involved...

The mother has decided that his name is not to go on the birth certificate.... and I think we know the implications of this...

My general question is; why on earth are unmarried mothers encouraged not to put the father's name on the certificate?

I remember when my son was born 3 years ago, I was told 'you will have more rights if you don't put the father's name down'
And you are told this when you are feeling vulnerable and on your own, not long after you have given birth... no wonder a lot of mothers think its a good idea at the time.... grrrrrrrrrrr

*rant over*

*but open to any advice I could pass on to him* :(

Scotland / Can anyone read this? William Brown Jeffrey. Horse Accident.
« on: Thursday 14 May 09 15:12 BST (UK)  »
It is an extract from William Brown Jeffrey's death certificate listing cause of death. So far I can read:

Fracture of the skull
and concussion(?) of the
brain caused by ??
?? ?? violent?
?? stone wall
by a horse while engaged
?? ?? deceased
?? ??
hour after the accident as
certified by Geo Henderson
surgeon ?? ??
deceased shortly ??
died 5th March 1859 and
was present when he died

Can you help me fill in the gaps? SP have already kindly re-scanned it so it must be a very poor original image.
Just a shame the parents/wife aren't named as I'm not 100% sure it is my man....

Thanks

World War One / When enlisting.... (NZEF)
« on: Tuesday 14 April 09 09:02 BST (UK)  »
When enlisting in WW1 would the soldier have has to bring his birth certificate with him, or could he effectively been a bit creative with his name and date of birth. I'm thinking specifically of the NZEF.

Just looking for different options on how to find a birth certificate/prove parentage.

Cheers
