That is brilliant, thank you! So he must have moved to Plymouth between 1881 and 1885. That narrows it down somewhat...  :D

Re-reading that... So he would have enlisted before 1885? Is that a definite cut off point for the service number given?

Thank you. What I don't understand though is why he is listed as war dead when, as far as I can tell, his dying at the barracks was more or less coincidental. His daughter was by his side and he died from a cerebral embolism and heart disease as far as memory serves... Would he have been listed as war dead just because he was a soldier in wartime?

The relations on the censuses aren't always reliable though... I found two censuses where Esther JONES was granddaughter on the first and daughter on the next. And Elizabeth J HAMLEY was the daughter of people later found to be her grandparents on her first census. Some people seemed to like to do things like this  ::)

Is there any way that her middle name might be the mother's maiden name?

Thank you  :)

I'm sorry, I didn't scan (I don't have a scanner) They are digital photos straight from camera.

(P.S Sorry about the one photo per thread, I'm getting a little over-excited again  ::) )

I saw someone's coloured photo on another thread and was astounded! I've found some photos of my g-grandfather and I feel a connection to him best of all the ancestors, so I was wondering if someone would be so kind as to work their mystical magic on him. (PS, sorry about the size of the photos... They were meant to be small but they seem to insist on being actual size despite my tampering...)

(I know the thread says only two a week, but I was also wondering if it was possible to de-mist a photo that I found of the soldier's dinner hall... I think it is my grandfather in it, but I can't be sure...)

Thank you very much indeed  :)

~Update~

In case anyone was interested... I'm back a generation or two on all branches now :) My great aunt supplied some more RICHARDS and a few photos as well, and I've been allocated the GILLs to research since no one else has done it, as well as ending up with JONES, HAMLEY, WOOD, URWIN, HINE and the elusive BRADYs (I think the fella has pulled a Hamley on me and was born under a different name...)

I've still got to confirm them all of course- I'm keeping a track of the unproved ancestors. But hey, it's progress  ;D
