Kent / whitstable training camp WW1
« on: Friday 14 October 11 18:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi, i have a photo of my husbands grandfather from WW1. we know he was in the Machine gun corps but before that in another regiment. the Great War Forum gents have now confirmed this as the Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment from the cap badge on this photo.

the photo is marked as Whitstable. Does anyone know of a local training camp used in WW1?

put this here rather than army boards because the interest is in the location
of the camp

Northumberland / Hoggs nursery,newcastle
« on: Sunday 18 September 11 16:22 BST (UK)  »
I have made a breakthrough recently in my Hogg family from scotland, who were all nurserymen.

I have Adam Hogg b.1803 berwick (brother of my direct line) who in 1841 -1871 was a nurseryman in Newcastle.

the 1871 census has him at 'Hoggs Nursery', with 4 acres. this falls between Armstrong street and Cruddas Lodge, Elswick. looking at district no 26 enumeration this seems to be present day Scotswood rd area. can anyone help pinpoint where the nursery was exactly? and any further info on it.

Adam died in 1876 - i have the probate record - but his son william mentioned, also nurseryman seems to be elsewhere in the 1881 as a 'farmer'

Roxburghshire / Hogg family
« on: Friday 16 September 11 14:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have just managed after years (through buying the wrong marriage cert!) to trace my James Hogg born scotland 1802 to:

James Hogg b. 27/3/1801 Kelso s/o John Hogg & janet Williamson
he married Ann Groves and lived /had children in Newcastle upon Tyne.

however i can't find his father Johns birth. he married Janet 20/6/1785 kelso.

both James & his brother Adam were nurserymen so maybe john was too.

the family did seem to move to berwick as Adam gives his pob in census as Belsay,Northumberland / Kelso but found him Berwick (8/12/1803)

can anyone help find Johns birth /death etc. i have family forward - any other siblings for John/Adam?
