my niece has recently moved into an old cottage (1700's) in the village and is interested in its history.

i have looked at the 1881 and 1901 census but can't find hardigate road on them.

does anyone know if the name of the road has changed.? hardigate road now runs from the North into the village centre.

may have to  go into the Notts library to look at maps!!

Durham / Marriage of Thomas Purvis
« on: Thursday 04 December 08 17:01 GMT (UK)  »
Thomas Purvis  b. c1844 eyemouth, berwickshire  married mary ann Charlton (nee gardner) between MAY 1868 and JAN 1870.

mary anns first husband Thomas charlton died may 1868.

mary ann and Thomas Charlton had a son john Tom Purvis jan 1870 in JARROW. she is named on the birth cert as Purvis, late charlton formerly Gardner.
on the 1871 census they are living in Jarrow, so assume marriage took place here.

i cannot find their marriage on A* / bmd / Durham records / igi

any ideas?   Diddy

Northumberland / Mariners on the census
« on: Tuesday 19 August 08 19:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I have a master mariner William Churnside who turns up on the 1871 census on a ship in dock.

His son James Edward Churnside - who i am really interested in as he married into my Charlton family - was also a seaman.

In 1881 he is on the ship "Wm Dickinson" at Tynemouth. now 1 can't find him anywhere on A** on the 1891 census. his wife is still living with her mothers family and by 1901 census is a widow. they had a child born 1893 so he has to be alive in 1891!!

Question - would mariners only appear on the census if their ship was in dock?

Northumberland / charlton high jinks!!
« on: Tuesday 12 August 08 16:18 BST (UK)  »
Thomas Charlton b. 1842 percy main married mary Ann gardner 3/8/1862 in Tynemouth.
William was born 5/2/1863 percy main
Elizabeth 1865.

thomas died in a railway accident sept 1871 in Newcastle.
Mary Ann I thought married Thomas Purvis before the 1881 census. However, i have at long last just traced them on the 1871 census (April) and they are down as married!!  def them as all names / places / dates / children etc  match.
I also have a possible census for T.Charlton in Newcastle on his own as a cabsman. he died as a goods guard on the railway.

Is it possible T.Charlton & Mary Ann divorced - did that happen then - OR - she could have just been living with T.Purvis (& had children by him - John T age 1, who i had always assumed was T.Purviss from a previous marriage) and the enumerator assumed they were married.

any thoughts?  cheers . Diddy
