Durham Lookup Requests / Re: Spennymoor Births/Baptisms - Carroll

Wow! ;D Thanks for the speedy replies! This is my first post on this forum and I'm well chuffed!

I'm not sure whether he was CoE because he married in The Register Office in Newcastle! His address and his wife's were adjacent houses in Newcastle which sounds a bit suss! Anyway, that's another story, I guess.

His daughter married in a CoE church and his wife's parents also, but I suppose that's not conclusive.

Yes, I've tried unsuccessfully at Bishop Auckland. I applied a while ago for an entry registered in the Durham district in Q1 1864.

Thanks anyway!
Alison

Durham Lookup Requests / Spennymoor Births/Baptisms - Carroll
« on: Wednesday 16 January 08 17:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have been at a "brick wall" with this one for a very long time.... I'm hoping someone can help me, please!

We have a James Carroll born about 1864 (based on census ages and his marriage and death certificates). According to the 1891 and 1901 Censuses, he was born in Spennymoor.

His marriage certificate gives his father as also James Carroll (deceased) Clock Weaver.

Here's the problem: I can't track down his birth or baptism (even allowing for different spellings) - I have had a couple of returned cheques from register offices.

What makes this worse is I can't find him in the 1871 or 1881 censuses at all! (Or at least not with a father James.) Consequently I have no idea about his mother.

The only possible entry for a James Carroll (senior) that I have found in the 1861 census shows him as Single and a lodger (from Ireland).

Any help gratefully received!

Thanks,
Alison
