Australia / Marriage of Thomas Hill and Elizabeth Mellish
« on: Sunday 16 June 13 05:05 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for a marriage of Thomas Hill and Elizabeth Mellish about 1860, possibly in Victoria.  Elizabeth was born in Dorchester England (1833) and Thomas in Hampshire in 1829.  I believe Elizabeth's father was John Mellish.  I don't know when Thomas and Elizabeth came to Australia.  There is an Elizabeth Mellish that was transported to Australia as a convict but I don't believe this is the Elizabeth I'm researching.  She married in Tasmania.

Elizabeth and Thomas had at least 5 children, all born Daylesford Victoria:  Thomas (1860)  Ann Elizabeth (1862)  William Charles (1864)  Emma (1866)  George (1868) and Frederick (1870).

Elizabeth died in 1872 and then Thomas with his children moved to Milparinka NSW.

Australia / Where is Kapawanta in South Australia?
« on: Monday 13 May 13 05:56 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out where Kapawanta/Capawanta is in South Australia.  I believe it is in the Port Lincoln area but don't know if it is a town or possibly the name of an outback station.  This place is listed as the birthplace of a person born in 1864.  The father's occupation was a shepherd.

I'm looking for a birth record of a person born in 1872 in South Australia and have checked the SA Genealogy Society's Online database using their search facility.  A record has not come up for this person. If a record does not come up using their search facility will they still be able to find the birth record.

Australia / Parents of Oskar Martin JOHNSON
« on: Friday 26 April 13 13:24 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out who the parents are of Oskar Martin Johnson.  On the weekend we visited the Stirling cemetery to find graves of great great grandparents William Thomas Johnson and Hannah Johnson.  The Stirling Council gave us 2 plot numbers for Hannah and William Johnson.  There were 2 double plots, not next to each other, but in close proximity.  One of the double plots was unmarked but the other double plot had a headstone:  This was for an Oskar Martin Johnson, who died 30 December 1902.  His age was a bit hard to read but it appeared to be 7 years.  The headstone did mention initials of parents  ???? and H. Johnson.

William Thomas Johnson died 18 December 1902 and his wife Hannah Johnson died in 1922.

If possible I would like to work out if there is a connection between Oskar Martin Johnson and William Thomas and Hannah.

This photo was taken of Jim and Jean around 1900 and is in a sorry state.  Could a kind "Rootschatter", if possible, repair the siblings.

London and Middlesex / William Thomas Hammond
« on: Tuesday 05 March 13 08:44 GMT (UK)  »
Am looking for opinions relating to a William Thomas Hammond, particularly about his parents.

William Thomas Hammond married Hannah Thick December 24, 1893 at St Johns Church, Chelsea.  Father is Thomas Thick, a dairyman.  Hannah's place of residence is 27 Milman Street and she gives her age as 22.

William states his father is William Thomas Hammond, a Coachman.  William is residing at 159 Kings Road, his age is 23 years and occupation a dispenser.

One of the witnesses is Frances Brown, the second I am not able to decipher.

After their marriage, William and Hannah can be easily found in the 1901 and 1911 Census.  In the 1891 Census both William and Hannah are also easily found.  William is working as an errand boy for a Surgeon and is residing at the same place listed on his marriage certificate.  He gives his birthplace as Newcastle.  In 1901 William's birthplace is given as Durham and in 1911 he states he was born in Darlington.

My dilema relates to the parents of William Thomas Hammond.  I believe William's parents are Thomas William Hammond and Mary Ann Hammond. A mistake possibly made on the Hannah and William's marriage record.  Thomas William Hammond was born in Petworth Sussex 1820 and married a Mary Ann Cotterill in Teesdale, Durham in 1865.  Thomas and Mary Ann had several children in Durham and then moved to London where they both died.  One of their children was a William Thomas Hammond, born November 28, 1873 and baptized in 1878 at St Saviours in Upper Chelsea.  One of Thomas and Mary Ann's children was a Frances Ann Mary who later married a Francis Brown.  One of the witnesses on William Thomas Hammond's marriage certificate is Frances Brown, most probably William's sister.

I have been in contact with a person who has a tree on Ancestry and we have exchanged a number of emails relating to William's parents.  This person is convinced that William's father is William Thomas Hammond born 1844 in Bedale, Yorkshire.  This William married an Elizabeth and worked for the Railways for a number of years.  The couple did have a child, William who was born in 1874  however in 1891 they have another child also named William aged 1 year.  I believe the William born 1874 died in 1886 aged 12 years.  I have recently received a death certificate for a William Hammond, son of William Hammond Foreman at Railway Yard.

I am looking for thoughts relating to William's parents.  Does my reasoning appear sound or am I completely off track?  I do have extensive information on Thomas and Mary Ann Hammond's other children, but William is the one I am stuck on and have followed through with a marriage to Hannah Thick.

United States of America / Marriage of William Smith to Annie ??????
« on: Saturday 12 January 13 08:03 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find a marriage of William Smith to an Annie.

William Smith migrated to a America in 1853.  He was born in Scotland in Athelstoneford in 1828.  William originally worked as a gardiner in Washington DC and then became the Superintendent of the Botanical Gardens.  He died in 6 July 1912 and is buried at the Rock Creek Cemetery.  I have the photos that are available online of this.

I have found William with his wife Annie in the 1870 US Census.  Annie is aged 28 years and there are 2 children, Lizzie (aged 7 years) and Alice (aged 5 years).  Wife Annie was born in England.

Anna M.  is with William in 1880 but the 2 girls are not with them.  From 1890 until his death in 1912 William is not listed on any of the Census data as living with Annie/Anna.   On the later census data (1900 and 1910) William states he is married and gives the number of years married so I'm not sure where his wife is.  It is interesting to note that on his headstone there is not mention of his wife and 2 children.

What I would like to try and find out is what was his wife's name, when they married and further details about the 2 girls.

Surrey / Harman family Croydon
« on: Sunday 18 November 12 01:59 GMT (UK)  »
I am interested in finding out information relating to a Richard and Lavinia Harman who resided in Croydon for many years.
Lavinia Edith Eggleston married Richard Harman in 1911.  Lavinia was born December 27, 1883.  She was the only daughter of John and Elizabeth Eggleston.  I have all details relating to Lavinia's ancestors so do not need to go backwards with her family.
I believe Lavinia and Richard had one son who was born in 1921.  Lavinia died in Croydon in 1968.  Richard ran a small carpentry and joinery business in Croydon.
