« on: Friday 09 November 12 10:21 GMT (UK)  »
I am wondering if someone could direct me to where I could find information about the Scottish Volunteer Forces - 2nd Midlothian Musselburgh and Peebleshire.  Am article in a newspaper has mentioned one of my husband's ancestors was with the Scottish Volunteer Forces.  I would like to find out more details about this and if possible obtain any records that may be available.

Canada / Canadian Voters Lists 1935-1980 on Ancestry
« on: Tuesday 16 October 12 09:54 BST (UK)  »
I have just noticed that on Ancestry there is the Canadian Voters Lists 1935-1980.

It is quite difficult to find information relating to ancestors who resided in Canada.  I have managed to find 2 people I have been trying to find on the Voters List.  I do not know when they both died but I now have evidence of where they lived up until 1963.

London and Middlesex / Foundling Hospital Records at LMA
« on: Friday 05 October 12 12:03 BST (UK)  »
Just wondering if anyone has been successful finding records relating to an ancestor who was placed into care at the Foundling Hospital.   A cousin has just passed on information relating to my grandmother and I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile following this through with the LMA.  As I do not live in England I would have to pay for the research to be carried out.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Deciphering a Witness Name

The second witness is a Frances Brown but the first one is a bittle difficult to work out.  Suggestions would be very much appreciated.

The Common Room / Searching for a birth entry at a Records office by date
« on: Monday 27 August 12 14:29 BST (UK)  »
I have not been able to find a birth registration for my grandmother.  Very little information is known about her.  Her children and grandchildren were told that she was brought up by others, possibly in an orphanage.   A 1904 marriage certificate and also a 1906 marriage certificate states a father's name but it has not been possible to find any existence of this person.

Grandmother first appears in the 1901 census, giving her birthplace as Linton, Kent.  She also provides this is her birthplace in 1911.   Grandmother celebrated her birthday on 14 August and her children were told that she was born in 1880.    My Grandmother went by the name of Ada Olive Grey Smith.

I have purchased a number of birth certificates for Ada Smiths born in Kent in the years ranging from 1878 to 1882 but have not been successful.  I've also purchased certificates for Adas with different surnames that could be possibilities but have still not been able to find anything.   At one stage I was sure that I had found my Grandmother but ended up delving quite deeply into an unrelated family and discovering a number of interesting things about this family.  I have also used the services of a Researcher to try and find information but this also has been unsuccessful.

My dilema is that I do not know if my Grandmother was registered under a different name and this was changed later or even if her birth was registered at all.

My query relates to if it is possible to have a birth registration personally searched for at a Records office using a birth date  ie 14 August 1880.

Australia / Help please with parents of William Arthur Johnson born SA 1864
« on: Saturday 28 July 12 06:53 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information relating to the parents of William Arthur Johnson who was born 20 June 1864 in Port Lincoln South Australia.  William died in Pata, South Australia in August 1938.  He was a drover.  I have quite a bit of information relating to William Arthur but do not know a lot about his parents or even if he had siblings.

His father was William Thomas Johnson born in England about 1824.  William Thomas died 18 December 1902.  I have found the death notice for William.  The notice mentions wife "Hannah Johnson" and father-in-law W H Marsh, late of Mallala.

I'm unsure of where and when William Thomas and Hannah married, if this was in South Australia or England.

London and Middlesex / Orphanage in London
« on: Saturday 21 July 12 11:45 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out some information about Isabella Gertrude Thomson Preston and the circumstances under which she went to Canada.  Isabella was born about 1880 in Chelsea, London and went to Canada in 1890.  Isabella married William Henry Lambert in Canada in 1917.

In the 1881 Census (RG11; Piece: 77; Folio: 51; Page: 23)  I think this is the entry for Isabella.  Isabella is aged one year, her mother is a widow and there is also a daughter Louisa aged 6 years (b1874).

I have come across an 1883 baptism record for Louisa Elizabeth Preston which mentions an orphanage.  I am not able to work out the name of the orphanage and if possible would like some help deciphering this.

Is it possible to have someone restore this photograph of great great grandparents and 3 children. I think this photo was taken late 1800s or early 1900s.  The youngest child was born in 1890.

Sussex / James King and Eliza Hammond marriage
« on: Friday 08 July 11 07:38 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find a date for a marriage for James King born 1797 in Arundel and Eliza Hammond born 1796 in Arundel.  In the 1841 Census they have four children, John 11, Alfred 9, Walter 5 and Emma 2.   Emma's birth certificate gives her birth date 14 June 1839.  Her parents are James King, Beer Shopkeeper and Eliza King formerly Hammond.
