FH Documents and Artefacts / Re: First Cert and it's wrong
« on: Thursday 07 January 10 03:37 GMT (UK)  »
I am from Australia and have ordered a number of certificates from GRO.  One order I sent through I put a wrong date of marriage but all other details were correct, including the Volume Number and Page Number.  The GRO did not send a certificate and gave me a part refund.  I recently made enquiries about a certificate ordered early December and still had not been received early January. GRO replied stating sorry that certificate had not been received they would send another one straight away.   Only problem I have had is ordering a certificate a second time by mistake.  Contacted to find out if I could change order but was not able to.  The moment you place an order there is no way that you can change this so you have to be extra careful that all the details you supply are correct.

Armed Forces / Re: Why two marriages?
« on: Sunday 20 December 09 04:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi scintilla,
Exactly same thing happened with my grandmother and grandfather. Grandfather was in the Army Ordinance Corps, joining in 1898.  First marriage was in 1904, in the Parish Church in Kent.  Their first child was born in 1905 and then a second marriage took place in 1906 in the Register Office.  They went on to have another 7 children.  Several of their children knew that they had been married twice and the reason given was that permission had not been given by the commanding officer for their first marriage.

Thank you for the link Stanmapstone.  I can now understand why there would be a number of transcription errors and also records that went missing.

Thank you c-side. Have only been doing family research for just over a year but I did not realise that the GRO ones were actually a copy that had been handwritten.  I thought the copies that I had been receiving from the GRO were the original entries.  Makes things a lot clearer now.

The Common Room / Signatures on Marriage Certificates

I have a number of copies of marriage certificates from the GRO ranging from 1880's to 1906.  For several of these the section at the bottom "This Marriage solemnized between us" appears to be in the same handwriting as the above section of the certificate. Did the Bride and Groom actually have to sign the Certificate?  Also, did witnesses have to sign the certificate as several marriage certificates also appear to be in the same handwriting as the rest of the certificate.

Kent / Re: Marriage of Frances Brown and Alfred Green
« on: Saturday 14 November 09 05:22 GMT (UK)  »
An update on Frances Brown and Alfred Green and children.

I have a birth certificate for Ada Green (born 20/9/1878) parents listed as Alfred Green and Frances Elizabeth Green formerly Brown.   Ada is not living with parents in 1881 and 1891.  In 1881 is with Charles and Mary Ann Smith listed as a visitor, aged 2.  In 1891 an Ada Smith, aged 13, is living with Charles and Mary Ann Smith.

I sent away for a birth certificate for a Florence Green (born 23/5/1970) parents listed as Alfred Green and Frances Elizabeth Green formerly Brown.  Florence is not with parents in 1871 and 1881.  In 1871 is with a family and is listed as "Nurse child" and in 1881 is with another family as a boarder.  In 1891 have not found her possibly because she would be a servant somewhere.

I have recently come across a marriage certificate for Florence Green and Arthur Abnett in 1892 in Woolwich.  On the certificate there is a * in the father's name column and in the marriage states "Illegitimate child - father not known".  The place of residence on the certificate is that where Charles, Mary Ann and Ada Smith are living in 1891.  A witness to the marriage is also Ada Smith.

Have a go.  It is so easy.  You do not need any special programs, just your normal Word document.  Let us know how things work out.
