Buckinghamshire / Pool(e) family with connections to Aylesbury, Reading and Baldock
« on: Sunday 19 October 14 07:29 BST (UK)  »
Hello - I wonder if anyone can help with a connection implied in a will? The 1766 will of Mary Moss of Baldock, Hertfordshire, whose maiden name I think was Stanton, refers to her cousin Mary Pool, widow of Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire and Mary Pool's daughter Diana Pool of Reading, Berkshire. I'd like to try and establish exactly how they were related - but as the family clearly straddled at least three counties I'm struggling a bit!

I've found that there was a Mary Poole, widow buried at Aylesbury in 1767, who I suspect was probably the widow of the Thomas Poole buried there in 1757, but I can't find any trace of the baptism of a Diana Poole, nor the marriage of Thomas and Mary to establish Mary's maiden name.

Can anyone spot any records which might help establish what the link was?

Many thanks
Richard.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Latin help
« on: Monday 25 August 14 10:43 BST (UK)  »
Hello
Can anyone help with this? It's from a Prerogative Court of Canterbury will for Stavely Stanton (Stannton or Staunton) of West Langton, Leicestershire who died 1691. There are two records for him: a will in English, which I can read with no trouble, and this Latin, which is much harder. I think it's his sister Elizabeth Pickering formerly Stanton challenging the will and the probate which was given to Stavely's wife Ann. It also names William Massey who I know was Stavely's guardian - he was only 16 when he died. Might this challenge be alleging that Stavely did not have his guardian's permission to marry? Does it say whether the challenge was successful or not? Apologies if my transcription is inaccurate - an image is available on Ancestry if anyone has a subscription there.

Many thanks
Richard.

Hello

I'm trying to establish what happened to Elizabeth Alston, baptised 1651 at Odell daughter of Sir Thomas Alston. She married Staveley Staunton of Birchmoor, Woburn in 1672 in London and they had three children baptised at Woburn: Staveley 1674, Francis 1675 and Elizabeth 1677. Her husband Staveley was buried 1678 at Woburn. The following year she married Montagu Pickering at Campton, before returning to Woburn where they had a son Edward baptised in 1681. Montagu was buried in 1694, but I can't find out what happened to Elizabeth.

As a fairly comfortably off family they did move around a fair bit - often getting married in London, and as well as the farm at Birchmoor in Woburn other members of the family had land at the Langtons in Leicestershire, and there also seem to have been connections with Warwickshire. Several online gentry trees have information on her birth and marriages but don't have anything about her death. On Ancestry there are a couple of member trees suggesting she died 1703 in Odell, but this is unsourced and as far as I can see there's no plausible burial at Odell in the National Burial Index.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Richard.

Cornwall Lookup Requests / Marriage lookup: Harry family, St Stephen by Saltash
« on: Sunday 03 August 14 09:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello - I've found a couple of marriages at St Stephen by Saltash which I think may be brothers:
m. 19 Oct 1808, St Stephen by Saltash: John Harry & Mary Tucker
m. 16 Feb 1809, St Stephen by Saltash: Richard Harry & Susannah Ellery
In the 1851 census John gave his place of birth at St Ives, whilst Richard gave his place of birth as St Ive (which is much nearer Saltash than St Ives). There was also a Robert married to a Mary a couple of doors away from John in the 1851 census who also gave his place of birth as St Ive.

If anyone is able to look up the 1808 and 1809 marriages and see who the witnesses were that might help establish if they were brothers or not.

Many thanks
Richard.

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Harrison baptisms 1690s at Flintham
« on: Wednesday 25 June 14 08:00 BST (UK)  »
Hello - does anyone has access to the Flintham parish registers please? I'm looking at a couple called George and Sarah Harrison who had several children at Granby between 1700 and 1713. They don't appear to have married at Granby, and the closest marriage I've been able to find is George Harrison and Sarah Wood who married at Flintham in 1694. I know from George's will of 1744 that he had a daughter named Elizabeth, who does not appear to have been baptised at Granby - I wonder if they had Elizabeth at Flintham before moving to Granby? There's also a Sarah daughter of George and Sarah who was buried at Granby in 1700 but doesn't appear to have been baptised there. If anyone is able to check for any Harrison baptisms at Flintham between 1694 and 1700ish I'd be very grateful. (Unfortunately the Flintham registers in the Notts Family History Society database only go back to 1702 at the moment.)
Many thanks
Richard.

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Buckland baptism lookups: John HAINES 1815
« on: Friday 16 May 14 15:19 BST (UK)  »
Hello - might someone be able to look up a baptism at Buckland for John Haines please? Census and death records suggest he was born there in about 1815, and his marriage certificate says he was the son of Thomas Haines, cow doctor.
Many thanks
Richard.

Hello - does anyone have access to any Leighton Buzzard non-conformist registers? I'm looking at a family called Linney, who appear from the censuses to have had more children than show up in the Anglican registers. Thomas Linney and Mary Tring married in the parish church in 1810 and in 1812 had a daughter Hannah baptised there. There's then no further Anglican baptisms at Leighton Buzzard to Thomas and Mary, but there are three baptisms (John in 1815, and Samuel and Eliza in 1818) to "Thomas and Elizabeth". The 1841 census finds Thomas and Mary living with children including a Samuel who could be the 1818 baptism, plus a Caroline, James and William all apparently born in the 1820s. I know the 1841 census doesn't show relationships, but when James and William each later married they said their father was Thomas Linney, whilst in the 1851 census Caroline had a niece Mary Williams living with her who appears to have been Hannah's daughter. The 1841 census also has John c.1815 and Hannah Williams nee Linney living in the same house.

I'm therefore coming to the conclusion that Thomas and Mary were misrecorded as Thomas and Elizabeth on the 1815 and 1818 Anglican baptisms (It's possible Thomas might have been married three times - first to Mary Tring, second to an Elizabeth and third to another Mary - but I can't see enough burials of wives or remarriages to make that work). I also think they had children called Hannah 1812, John 1815, Samuel and Eliza 1818, Caroline c.1821, James c.1824, and William c.1829. They might also have been the parents of the five year old George who died in 1832, for whom there is no obvious baptism.

I know at least one of Thomas and Mary's grandchildren later had her children baptised in one of the Methodist Churches in Luton. Might it be that Thomas and Mary also became Methodists in the 1820s, which is where Caroline, James and William (and possibly George) were baptised? Alternatively I understand there was also a Baptist church in Leighton Buzzard at that time. If anyone has access to either the Methodist or Baptist Registers I'd be grateful if you could see if my Linneys turn up in either.

Many thanks
Richard.

Armed Forces / Unknown uniform
« on: Tuesday 01 January 13 20:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hello - does anyone have any ideas what uniform this might be please?  It's George Nicholls (1874-1931), who would have been 40 when the Great War broke out, and lived in Harpenden, Hertfordshire.  We think the picture was taken about 1918.
Any clues / ideas gratefully received.
Many thanks
