The Common Room / Re: Finding all births for a female ancestor

If Roberta wasn't openly admitted to be Marion's mother by the family, the 'brother' referred to in the letter may not actually be another child of Roberta's. He may be a child of whoever the family claimed Marion's parents were - perhaps Roberta's parents? Alternatively it could be another child of the couple who raised her as a nurse child as a sort of adoptive brother.

Whetstone straddled the parishes of Totteridge in Hertfordshire and Friern Barnet in Middlesex - Oakleigh Road was in the Friern Barnet section of Whetstone. Old parish boundary maps at visionofbritain.org.uk

Scotland / Testament look up General Register House: Henry Clouston Maitland 1962
« on: Tuesday 27 February 18 12:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hello - I gather the only way to check for testamentary records post 1925 is to visit General Register House in Edinburgh. Being in southern England this isn't easy. I'm trying to establish whether Henry Clouston Maitland left a will - he died in Edinburgh on 4 Nov 1962. Might anyone be able to look it up for me please?
Many thanks
Richard

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Where are my paternal ancestors?
« on: Monday 05 February 18 15:20 GMT (UK)  »
One thing I've noticed is some branches seem to have many more connections than others. My grandmother of Irish descent has many more close matches on Ancestry than my grandmother from Bedfordshire does. All the matches I've been able to confirm on the Irish side are via cousins who emigrated to America, which is where a large proportion of Ancestry's database live. Emigration from Bedfordshire is by comparison far less prevalent, and the matches I have on that side tend to be people still in the UK, who I suspect comprise a much smaller proportion of Ancestry's database.
Regards
Richard

Thanks Istrice - nice to pinpoint it on the map. Looks like it's in the same area the Ordnance Survey today label Laigh Fenwick, around the junction of the roads now called Main Road and Waterslap (good name).

Excellent bit of sleuthing ShaunJ and everyone - here's the image of that 1804 baptism from Fenwick, Ayrshire. This Alexander was indeed born in Ross / Rose Fenwick. I think we have our answer.
Many thanks to all.
Richard.

Thanks all - good ideas. Looking through the gazetteer I have spotted 'Rhughasinish' on South Uist - wonder if the Gaelic pronunciation would be something closer to Rosefinie? (The WeRelate page was me.) Equally, Daniel from Paisley being a tailor also in St Pancras sounds worth a bit more investigation.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Illegible birthplace, 1851 census
« on: Friday 26 January 18 07:19 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help work out what this birthplace is meant to say please? It's from the 1851 census for Alexander McKenzie, a Scottish tailor living in St Pancras. Class HO107; Piece 1493; Folio 563; Page 8. Anything I can make of it doesn't seem to be a real place. This was the only census in which Alexander gave a more precise place of birth than 'Scotland'. Confidence isn't inspired by the fact that his wife was from Woburn in Bedfordshire, and there are plenty of streets named after Woburn in that part of London, yet her birthplace has come out as 'Waurbourn'.
