Essex / Rolison/Rollison/Rolinson/Rowlinson/Rawlinson.
« on: Tuesday 23 June 09 20:54 BST (UK)  »
As you can see there is a problem with the amount of differing ways this surname has been spelt over the years. To date I have 12 different ways of spelling, what should actually be "Rolison" in my tree.
I live quite some way away from Cheltenham, and wonder if anyone is likely to be paying a visit to the records section and could perhaps do a look up for me.

I have Gr Gr Gr Granparents John Rolison and Rebecca ? who are the parents of John/Rebecca/Sophia and Joseph ( Joseph is my Gr Gr Grandfather) All these children were born in Ramsden Heath between 1813 and 1820.

I believe John was born about 1813 as he is shown as being 38 years old in the 1851 census, he married Rebecca Jennings on the 12/4/1834 in Westley Waterless, Cambs.

Rebecca was born in 1815?, and she is shown as a widow in the 1851 census aged 36 years-married name Curtis (m) 27/10/1832.

Sophia was born in 1818/9 according to the 1851 census, where she is shown as aged 32 years, however I have a copy of the original record from the fiche at Chelmesford that shows her as being baptised in 1813. Maybe there was two Sophia's born!! As this is the year her brother John was born perhaps she was a twin. Sophia was married to John Bridge in Westley Waterless, Cambs on the 19/9/1840. The name on the marriage cert was spelt Rowlinson-Father John Rowlinson.

Finally Joseph, my Gr Gr Grandfather, was born 1819 ish-baptised on the 14/2/1819 in Ramsden Heath-I have a copy of his record from the fiche also. He married Eliza Rivett on the 25/12/1843 at Carlton, Cambs-Father John Rolinson this time.

Any help/suggestions as to where I go from here are very welcome. Maybe the Parents John Rollison and Rebecca were married in Ramsden Heath!

HELP PLEASE!

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Longstock Park, Andover.
« on: Friday 20 March 09 16:17 GMT (UK)  »
I have just found out that my Uncle-Reginald Rolison sailed from Southampton on the 15th September 1927  to Buenos Aires, Argentina. He lived at Longstock Park, Andover at the time and was a Gamekeeper. He sailed on the Asturias, which was a Steamship Line.

Does anyone know what the Asturias would have carried at the time or if it was just a passenger ship. I see there have been quite a few Asturias's over the time, so don't know which is the right one. Also who owned Longstock Park at the time, as it seems a strange journey for a Gamekeeper to take at this time, and wonder if mayby his voyage was organised by his boss. He seems to have travelled with a shepherd from the same area as their tickets are 114 and 115-both were from Andover. Any help would be appreciated.

World War Two / Cameronians 1940-1946
« on: Saturday 14 February 09 15:49 GMT (UK)  »
My relative Arthur Colin Pitt served with the Cameronians in WW2 from 27/6/1940 to 11/3/1946. As he lived in Hampshire when he joined them, I am wondering why he was in a Scottish Regiment. I know he was in Burma as I have his Burma Star medal. His number was 5575523. Can anyone help please?
Thanks.

Essex Lookup Requests / Marriage-Ramsden Heath area.
« on: Tuesday 30 December 08 14:00 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone offer help in finding my G G G Grandfather and G G G Grandmother's marriage please? I have tried to trace them before using Rootschat, and did receive a lot of help/suggestions. The names are John Rolison (spelt many ways) and Rebecca. I have obtained copies of marriages that were on a fiche from Essex Records Office for marriages in Ramsden Crays from 1810 to 1820, but no luck in this area. The first child was born in 1813 in Ramsden Heath and was baptised in Ramsden Crays, and whilst I know this is not a full proof starting point I didn't know where else to start. There were four children in total all born in Ramsden Crays between 1813 and 1820, so believe they must have married somewhere in the region. Thanks for any help that you may be able to offer.
