Hi,
Welcome to Rootschat.
Could you give a bit more info. please? You mention Benjamin, William and Samuel Newell, so were these brothers, and what dates do you have for them? There are various sites you can go back before 1837, but some you have to pay to join. The free ones are FreeReg/FreeCen/FreeBMD with just FreeReg going back before 1837. Other sites are familysearch.org, which is also free, and goes back before 1837. Paying sites are Ancestry.com, findmypast.com, and there are many others as well.
Hope this helps.
regards.

Just in case you didn't find what you needed, here is what I have found.

William Cate and Agnes Dummet had the following children;Dorothy Cate baptised 17/8/1634; Joane Cate baptised 1/1/1636; William Cate baptised 22/12/1639;Henry Cate baptised 18/8/1644.

William Cate 1639 married Jone(Joan) Grange 3/6/1654. Jone(Joan) was the daughter of Jone who was a widow. All in Chardstock, Dorset.

Dorset / Re: Mitchell family Somerset/Dorset

Hi,
I am not sure what you have already found.

Albert was born in Taunton, Somerset June Qtr 1848 10 492.

Albert and Tabitha were married in Weymouth Sept Qtr 1870 5a 524.

On the 1911 census Albert, Tabitha + children James aged 27 years born Wyke Regis;Elizabeth Ann aged 24 years born Wyke Regis and Rose aged 18 years born Wyke Regis-all 3 are unmarried.

There were 10 children born and 9 still living in 1911. The family were living at 5 Evelyn Terrace, Wyke Regis, Weymouth, Dorset. Albert was a Platelayer working for the Great Western Railway.(GWR) His son James was working for Whiteheads Ltd.

I then went to the Dorset OPC site-Wyke Regis and found a couple of other children born to Albert and Tabitha; Henry Groves Mitchell 26/7/1874, and Alice Mitchell born 10/12/1876.

There are other Mitchell/Groves families on the OPC site for Wyke Regis, which may well turn out to be relatives.

regards.

I think the last info explains who Joseph Cox was.

On 5) what I was wondering was if William Cox Mayes was the son of a William Cox and a Mary Mayes with possibly Mary Mayes being a sister of William Mayes 1776ish. No evidence for this just a thought to perhaps explain why he might have been living with William on the 1841 census.

Hi,
I like a challenge!!

Right here is what I have come up with;
1) On the 1841 census there are families for Deighton/Cox and Mayes that are in addition to the ones you mention living in Knotting.

2) William Mayes 1776 seems to have been married to a Jane Abbott 18/2/1805, and after produced three children-one pair of twins-she then died on the 5/1/1812. Jane's parents were Hannah and Thomas. The children were John Nimrod Mayes and his twin Tabitha Mayes born 17/5/1807, and Mary Abbott Mayes 5/8/1810. This could be your Mary Ann Mayes who later married William Bird as the date is about right.

3)William Mayes 1776ish buried Knotting aged 74 years 12/11/1848,St Margaret, Beds.

4)There are a couple of William Cox's who married Mary's in the 1820's, but although they are in Beds they are not in Knotting.

5) I guess it is possible that William and Mary Cox who had William Cox Mayes and Joseph Cox died, and that William Mayes 1776ish brought them up-perhaps Mary was his sister?

6) I would think that the two children Sarah and George who are living with William Mayes in the 1841 census are the same two who were born to Catherine Deighton 1829 and 1832 bearing in mind the dates on 1841 weren'y very correct sometimes.

Just a few thought-hope it helps
regards.

Yes, I think yours is probably the correct title for the school though as there is some info on the net about the Aubin Norwood School.
