US Completed Requests / Re: WOOTTON. Pennsylvania look up 1900 please
« on: Saturday 04 June 11 17:44 BST (UK)  »
Hello aitch
My dad's grandparents on his father's side were both from the Tuscarora Township area of PA. The families were there for several generations and they all had a lot of kids, so I have a lot of family all over that area. (I think I could find at least one distant cousin in just about every cemetery in that area!)

I found these posts last night and looked though some of my paperwork this morning.  So far, I only found one little tid-bit for you, but will keep my eye out for more.   I have a copy of a newspaper article that mentions social news of the day.  It is from the summer of 1917, dated July 30th:  L. M. Magee and family spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. George Wooton at Clapper Hill

I have 3rd great grandparents buried at Beaver Meadows (their last name was Bennett).   I noticed  the write up on Beaver Meadows Church said that your Wootton had some descendants with the name Bennett.  There's a book on the Bennett family in my local library.  I have been working on copying it, starting with pages of my lines.  According to the index, your H. Olin Wooton is mentioned in there with his wife Ina Beeman, but I have not copied those pages yet and the library is closed weekends for the summer  :(   I will get there when I can and see if there is any information to help you.

The tri-counties site Sandra sent you the link to is a wonderful site (as I am sure you already discovered)

 :)

United States of America / Re: 1870 NY Census assistance please

Hello,
I found this site:   http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nynewyo2/census/
which has a link to ward boundaries.
It has the 7th ward as:
NB on Catherine St from East River to Division St; then EB on Division St to Grand St; then EB on Grand St to East River.

I did a map search and those streets are in the lower east side of Manhattan in the area of the Manhattan bridge.

I am not sure about the election district, but I hope this helps in narrowing down the area.

US Lookup Requests / Re: Gates Of Heaven Cemetery - Mount Pleasant New York
« on: Friday 04 June 10 04:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I found an address for you, but was not able to find a website for the cemetery to find out their policies regarding what they charge for copies of burial records.

Gate of Heaven Cemetery
10 West Stevens Ave
Hawthorne NY 10532
914-769-3672

I looked at a map of Hawthorne, and the cemetery is quite large.  It does appear to be Gate not Gates.  I found a couple sites that list well known people buried there.

The Weschester GenWeb site:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nywestch/index.htm
I didn't see information about the cemetery, but maybe if you try posting on the county message board, maybe you will get lucky and someone in the area that can give you more information.

Good Luck,
Lisa

I find this story so interesting.

This may be an obvious thing you have already tried, but did Bill have a family?  Could he have any decedents that could tell you anything about Ann's life?

In order for Bill to recognize John, Ann it seems like must have told Bill of his father and brothers.   If Ann wanted to forget that time in her life, as she seemed to indicate by not seeing John, I'm surprised she was honest with Bill and even told him he had brothers.

I think that sometimes the deaths, and other negative things we find, often overshadow the positive and happy things we learn.

I think of my great grandmother.   She left England for the US in 1891 at the age of 19.  I think of her leaving home with just her one piece of luggage.   One of her brothers was in the US, but she must have left knowing  she would most likely never see her parents, siblings or other relatives again.   I can’t imagine having that amount of courage.

Hi Courtneys Gram,

Here is a link to the 1900 census
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home

1900 census does have widowed for Joseph.  I wondered the same thing merjones did.   The other thing I wondered about was they said they were married 20 years.  That would mean they were married in 1880.  He was still in England with wife Mary then.  ???

If I found the correct Thomas in 1900, he was with wife Mary, children Thomas, Berthia, Mary L. & Leonard, and mother Mary L. (hint: when searching on the site above for Thomas - use  Tomnes for the 1st name)

If I have the right Thomas, in 1910, he seems to have moved to Bristol, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.  Thomas & Joseph have year of immigration 1882. Both are naturalized.
Thomas C., head,   40yrs   married 20 yrs
Mary J,. wife,  45yrs   She has had 9 children, 7 still  living
Thomas C. Jr , son,  18yrs
Berthana, daughter, 15yrs
Elizabeth M., daughter, 12yrs
Leonard M., son, 10yrs
Florence C., daughter,   7yrs
John J., son,   6yrs
Joseph, son,   6yrs
Joseph D  brother  40yrs.  Single

I have been trying to find a immigration record with no luck so far.  Do you need census information or do you have all of this already?

United States of America / Re: 1920 Census - same sex "Partner"?
« on: Sunday 07 February 10 17:55 GMT (UK)  »
Here's a guess.... what if it means they shared bills equally?  That instruction for enumerators say "other or others", so it doesn't seem to me they are using the term as a couple in a sexual relationship

I'm not sure how much cotton weavers would make, or how much it would cost to run a house at that time.  If your ancestor lived with the family for a while, they might have felt like family.  If neither happen to marry, it might just be they remained living together so neither had to live alone.  There may or may not have been anything sexual - that may be something you never know.

Vazzycat -That's a great  link - I made a note of it for my future questions.

Lisa M - I don't know anthing about the instructions for 2010, but I just read the other day there are only 10 questions total.  They don't even seem to ask relationship.

Hi
You may also want to have a look at  fultonhistory.com   They have searchable PDF files of NY Newspapers.    I have found wedding announcements, obituaries and all kinds of society type articles on my family in NY.
Good luck searching,
Lisa
