Durham / Elusive Mary Ellen born 10 September in Gateshead.
« on: Tuesday 21 September 21 20:50 BST (UK)  »
I have been trying to find Mary Ellen Mallachin/ Johnson since I found her with my grandfather, their mother, step father and stepbrother on the 1911 Census.
I had not known anything about my grandfather until 1911 census was published. I had been told (by his only living child that he was born 9 June 1900 but found out that the year was actually 1899 and he was born in Gateshead workhouse as per birth certificate. His sister was born 10 September 1901 as on her baptism record but I have never found a birth registration for her. On baptism record she is Maria Helena Mallachin daughter of Margaretha Mallachin. Presumably RC.
Her mother married a Charles Johnson in 1904 but he died a few months after. Both children were then known as Johnson.  Their mother then married a Thomas Coyne in South Shields begore moving to Blyth.
Mary Ellen only appeared on 1911 census and then on my grandparents marriage certificate and nowhere else after. I have kept going back to her and now have found her via marriage record but I wonder if it was normal for children not to have birth registered or is it just an oversight somewhere in the system.

Thanks in advance.
Emma.

Firstly, that you for your prompt replies. Your information has helped me in confirming which of the brothers it is. I posted the photo in my tree thinking it was Henry Hansen b. 1895 not knowing there was William Hansen b. 1901. This would put him between his two sisters Elizabeth and Catherine as on the photo.
Gadget, you are correct in the family on both the 1901 and 1911 censuses even though some of the spellings and names are slightly different due to the father Christopher (born Hans Christian Hansen) was Norwegian.
I wonder if anyone can explain about the wound stripes? I have found Williams military record and it seems he was discharged due to a hearing impairment he got while in the merchant navy. Looking at his record the photo has to be 1920.

Thank you so much for clearing my foggy brain.
Emma.

I was wondering if anyone could help date the boy in the attached photo. The girls are his sisters and the one on the left was born in 1903 and the elder one (my grandma) was born in 1897. I originally thought it was one brother born 1895 before I learned of the younger brother born 1901. Hopefully I can amend my tree and make sure it is correct.

Hi Eggy,
I have not been on here for ages until tonight when I found your post. I'm not sure about your photo and google bit. We always called his property "the Ranch" for what reason I don't know.
His house as a beautiful stone single storey property (not so beautiful inside though". It was about halfway along the track from hairpin bend to Bedlington main street. There was another house if I remember correctly nearer to Bedlington end. My grandad had fields for veg, apple and pear trees, bee hives in his garden and he had lots of chickens and turkey ready for christmas. He travelled around the area selling eggs. His name was Hunter. One of my uncles lived in the bungalows near the Bank Top pub.
I'm pretty sure I have a photo shoot of his house somewhere. Will look and see if it was where you played as a lad.

I think it is the best post I have ever read. Took me long enough thouh, four days on and off.
As to your theory of loan sharks hmmmm. I would not be surprised at all. I seem to think there were "mafia type goings on" especially in Newcastle. I did work for an Italian family years ago and they were far from whiter than white. Must say lady of the family was very nice but others---- say no more! I do not think he deserted the family because at least he was kind enough to make sure they were cared for if only in the workhouse (not perfect but can imagine better than totally deserted at the time.)
I spoke to my cousin who has Italian relatives and he also says some strange goings on in the family. They also had ice cream vans!!!
I really hope the mystery gets unravelled (sooner the better as I don't think I can bear the suspense😂😂)
It has been interesting reading about the workhouse as my own grandad turned out to be born in Gateshead Workhouse which was a complete shock to all of us. Not really found out much more about him though.
Well, sorry for the tome, hope you have a good christmas and a very happy new year.

May I say what an interesting post this turned out to be. Came across it by chance but it has kept me enthralled for four days on and off. Couldn’t wait to pick up my phone again to check next posts. It’s amazing how you all 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Gradually come up with your answers (or maybe not answers just more puzzles) You could make a film out of this and I would still be captivated by the story. Thanks to all for letting me be part if only reading the posts.

Hi Mary. I have just seen your post. I am originally from Blyth and my great grandfather was a seaman from Norway. He was born Hans Christian Hansen (from Norwegian records) but obviously changed his name to a more English name of Charles. He came over on a ship from norway and married my g grandmother in Newcastle before moving to Blyth.

Hello again, I have been to our local library and have done a bit more digging. I searched for Gladys Irene Morgan and found a death notice Gladys Morgan b 1921 d Aug 1980. Cemetery is Field of Mars, East Ryde, Ryde City, NSW. Husband Christopher Hansen.
I think this is the correct notice for my Christophers wife.

Phew that was a lot for you to transcribe. I am so grateful for your help over the last few days and back in 2010 when I first started this thread.
I did think this side of my family was straight forward but has proved not to be.
I have only been up North once since we saw you at Woodhorn but who knows might get there and see you again sometime.

Thanks so so much
Barbara.
