The Common Room / Re: Pronounced Dead

The Presumption of Death is normally 7 years after the last known sighting typically associated with a shipwreck, mine accident or similar disaster. At times if the "evidence" supports this a lesser period of time is used as the declaration allows some stability to resume in family life e.g. a life insurance payout, a widow's pension or re-marriage. I believe in some recent events such as terrorist explosions, missing aircraft, earthquakes etc the Family Division of the High Court have considered a period of a few months rather than the 7 years. I would think however a missing person or a deserter as in this case would be in the normal 7 year period. Recently Lord Lucan has been made a Presumption which allowed his son to inherit the title.

In theory if the person later turns up or the date of death varies from the Presumption a further application would be made to cancel the original but as fees [possibly solicitor's fees as well] would be involved it is likely the family would not wish to follow it through although if an insurance company or transfer of property was involved, there would be a greater need.

Two possible clues in helping to establish rows etc. [1] Use the CWGC website which gives the plot number and the grave see http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead.aspx?cpage=1&sort=name&order=asc
and then compare that data to the plot numbers you have, even if it gives a negative answer it is a start [2] use the photographs on the Find A Grave website https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=2205182 and perhaps ask the cemetery office to give plot references to one or two in that way you have a marker to set yourself going.
It is very strange that they do not have a map as I cannot envisage undertakers/ grave diggers/ maintenance men trawling around for an hour or so looking for a particular grave each time they visit the cemetery. Why not ask politely the method they [the council staff] use to find a grave? Contact a local undertaker [eg Co-op] to ask how they trace a grave there.
Perhaps depending on how important it is to you, the answer may be to set aside a day and meet the cemetery official as has been offered.

The indoor officer dealt with ships masters reporting their arrival/ cargo etc, collecting fees for other agencies such as light dues, registering vessels or recording a change of owner/ ships name, receiver of wreck etc - mainly duties of a clerical administration. The outdoor officers were as described engaged in practical work, visited bonded warehouse etc and supervising cargo.

Hi all! Hoping to find records for 2 people at Knowle Hospital/Asylum, Fareham....

I know my Great-nan, as well as her sister were both admitted there (at seperate times)

I would love to see some of their records to know more about them. If anybody is near, or already going to the archives could you please possibly try and look for those medical records of my 2 relatives?

Their names are: Bertha Annie Trott (nee Lynch) born 1887 and her sister Laura May Beesley (nee Lynch) born 1893. Laura died in 1967 whilst at Knowle hospital.

Cheers

Are you aware of the 100 year closure rule on records?

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Re: Burial of Charles John White

Probably your best chance is to contact clerk@hartleywitney.org.uk [there is in some cases a search fee]. In all probability due to the circumstances it was a burial funded by public funds which could be a communal grave with several interments or a single grave with no identifying name/headstone/kerb but possibly a marker with a plot no - the search by the parish clerk normally gives a map with the location. However it is always possible that relatives provided a conventional burial not necessarily at HW but in his originating or normal place of abode village or town but first check with HW.

They do not list house numbers only names but it mentions a side path running down to St Denys Station. Just a long shot but was the document an English one as a partnership [lawyers?] called Belmont Crescent were registered in Southampton, New York
