Norfolk Completed Look up Requests / G. g. grandparents - missing in 1871 COMPLETED

Thomas (sometimes called James!) Mills, bpt 3 Sept 1806, Cantley and his wife Hannah, bpt 18 Dec 1813, Gt. Yarmouth were married in Gt. Yarmouth on 2 June 1835.

I have them on ’41, ’51 and ’61 census and I have Hannah as a widow in ’81(all in Gt. Yarmouth) but I have failed to find them anywhere in ’71.  There should also be at least one child living with them - Ellen Gertrude aged 10.

Now I have come across a potential burial for Thomas in 1874 so the ’71 detail would be useful.

Could someone please have a look and see whether they can spot any of them?

Technical Help / How did they know it was me?

I had an email from Ancestry telling me that there had been additions to my family tree.  Very odd because I don’t have my tree on Ancestry.

Eventually I realised that they were referring to a tree I had looked at a few days earlier - not via my Ancestry log-in but from a private one-name website where my log-in is entirely different.

So - how did they know it was me?

I've just had an email notification that one of the threads I have contributed to has been deleted by the person who instigated it.

I thought that posts were simply marked 'compete' and that deleting wasn't an option.

Can anyone shed any light?

In relation to functions within coastal defence buildings can anyone tell me what these could be, please?

Gun emplacement:  RBL, ASL, SR  - there are also numbers 1 - 6 which I am assuming are gunners 1 - 6.  Please tell me if I’m wrong
 
 Search Light:  SM, LA, EA,  also NCO i/c DS and NCO i/c ER.  I know NCO and i/c but not the last bits
 
Observation Post:  DCA, DRF 1-3,  TEL presumably means telephone
 
Admin & Q’master:  SO, NO,  BQ = Battery Quartermaster?

The Common Room / Copyright in relation to county records offices

Although the complexities of Copyright law leave me reeling I do understand the need for and purpose of copyright protection.  I am also fairly certain that county records offices do not have the copyright on all the items they hold but still they insist on the completion of ‘The Copyright Form’ which lists all the dos and don’ts surrounding photocopies of documents.  So my first question is -

Do CROs have a legal obligation to protect the copyrights of their donors?

The reason I’m asking is that, for the first time ever, I obtained a copy of a page from a parish record microfilm from my local CRO and was amazed at the detail required.  Microfilm number, Parish, Type of record, Date, Name of person whose record is being copied, Page number (try finding one of those from 1730!) and another heading which I have now forgotten.

The only other copy of a parish record I have ever had was many years ago from a neighbouring CRO and I don’t recall having to complete any forms at all.  So my second question is -

Is this now standard procedure - do all CROs follow this or do any of you have other experiences/ knowledge on this subject?

The Common Room / Unusual entry in Bishop’s Transcripts

I had always assumed that parish record entries would be fairly straightforward - child is baptised, vicar, curate or clerk makes entry into register then, once a year, a copy of the register is sent to the bishop.  Then I came across this -

Bishops Transcripts, Horton, Northumberland.  Baptisms 1830.

After the last baptism in 1830 there is written “The following entry could not be inserted in it’s proper place as the parents neglected to send it in due time”

A baptism dated 8th February 1830 was then added.  It goes on to say “It is therefore inserted at the end of the register book p 200”

The record no. for the last baptism of 1830 is 1385:  the one which is added is numbered 1593.  Record no. 1593 is in the middle of August 1833 - dated 8th Feb. and marked ‘copied’.  There is no mention of the correct year nor is it cross-referenced.

My questions are

1.  What was it that the parents neglected to send in?

2.  How could the curate add this to the bottom of a record which should have been in the hands of the bishop over two years earlier?

Any ideas?

Cavan / Catholic church records - Shercock

One of my ancestors gives his birth place as Shercock - c 1818 according to age on English census records.

His children were all born in the north east of England and baptised RC so there is a good chance that he was also RC.

Can anyone tell me where the nearest Catholic church would have been and whether their records are available, please?

I would also appreciate any guidance on where to find information on the place itself.

"Catherine the daughter of a stranger who was brought to bed on her journey was baptised"

No chance of adding her to a family tree  :-\
