World War One / Beadwork - POW or trench art?
« on: Wednesday 05 March 14 00:10 GMT (UK)  »
I have been loaned a beadwork item for a WW1 display.  It’s a flower made from wire and beads and the owner believes that it was made by his grandfather while a POW.

There is also a letter dated October 1917 (prior to his capture) in which the man tells his wife that he will “send the beads as soon as he gets a chance”.

I am anxious to label this item correctly but the trouble is I can find no reference to this type of work being done either in pow camps or in the trenches and wonder whether anyone has come across anything similar.

The Common Room / A couple of questions on divorce
« on: Sunday 16 September 12 01:24 BST (UK)  »
The subject came up in conversation the other day and naturally I found myself wondering how this would affect family research.  I’ve not come across any divorces (yet) but would like to know the practice

When you get divorced the marriage certificate is handed in - is it still possible to get a copy of the certificate from GRO and, if so, is there any indication on it that a divorce has taken place?

If you marry, say, in England and then emigrate would a divorce have to go through an English court or can it be done in the country where you currently live?

Armed Forces / Women at War WW1 and WW2
« on: Sunday 01 July 12 01:04 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to locate photographs of women carrying wartime occupations - preferably copyright free - to use in an educational/informational display.  The only thing I have plenty of are WW2 Land Army photos.  WW1 pictures are particularly scarce.

Can any one help by pointing me to a website or any other ideas?

Armed Forces / Am I asking the impossible?
« on: Tuesday 08 November 11 01:39 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find information on an army doctor but have little more than his name to go on.

From the back of a photograph:  Dr. Col. Robinson

He was apparently in the army from 1914 until 1946 so was, I assume, a career soldier.

Bearing in mind that I am the world’s worst internet searcher is there any way to track him down?
