I don't think it would be too difficult to look at the register as we are only looking at a short space of time.  He wouldn't be there before he was orphaned in 1913 and he would have left Green's at the age of 12 in 1916 - so only 3 or 4 years.  It's worth a try

I agree with Boo on her 'belt and braces' approach.  Although it's difficult before 1837 the 'three pieces of evidence' rule should be followed at all times.

As for the original parish records - that's where I come in.  If they are not available on line I am at the archives almost every week and often in need of something to do so just ask  :)

I did look at Christchurch baptisms but the name Meldrum did not appear anywhere.  Depending upon where they lived the baptisms could be at Wallsend or even Earsdon.  They might also have been non-conformist.

I’m at the archives most weeks so if you can think of where else they might be I’d be happy to look again

I checked out the index of items held relating to the Wellesley school.  Lots of financial stuff and loads too recent to be available to the public but the registers held are -

NRO 7146/3/1  1888 - 1921  Register of Boys at Greens Home Industrial School, South Shields ( a branch of HMS Wellesley) for boys up to age 12 .  After that they would be transferred to Wellesley for training in seamanship.
The register contains - name, age, date of admission, home town, charge, term at the school, date of discharge, the Board of Guardians to be charged for maintenance and who ordered the admission

NRO 7146/3/2   1868 - 1939  Register of boys at HMS Wellesley
The register contains - name, age, date of admission, home town, charge, term at the school, date of discharge, the Board of Guardians to be charged for maintenance and who ordered the admission

I didn’t look at the registers because it seems to me from the content that the entries would all relate to boys with some kind of ‘criminal’ record and this would not apply to a lad from an orphanage but I’m happy to look next week if you think it would be worth it.

Going back to Mary 1 for a minute - I think this is the one as there are no other Mary Masons born in Heddon between 1800 and 1812

Mary Mason, born May 26th and baptised October 19th 1800.  1st daughter of Thomas Mason, Farmer native of Wylam and Elizabeth Gilhespy native of this parish.

It was actually both points  :)

I was also going to point out that ages on the 1841 census were rounded down to the nearest 5 so her year of birth could be anytime between 1805 and 1811.  There's an awful lot of Mary Masons born in Northumberland in that timescale!

I'm pleased you provided the line and column, Boo, I'd never have found them otherwise!

William Hogg was born June 7 1805 at Heddon on the Wall the son of John Hogg & Jane Bell.
William married Mary Mason born on the 8th February 1832.

Records are showing their marriage at Heddon on 4th February 1832 ??

There are some records for the Wellesley School at Northumberland archives which we looked at for the Battista thread.

I recall an admissions book for the 'naughty' boys, those who had committed petty crimes or had simply been 'found wandering' (homeless) but I'm not sure now whether they had the equivalent for those placed from workhouses for training purposes.

I will ask when I'm there on Wednesday and, if the records exist, I can have a quick look for your young man.
