You may all know about this but just in case you don't - we have a genuine historic vessel floating in South Harbour.  A wooden light vessel built in 1879 as LV50 which is the headquarters of the yacht club.

A link to its website -

They are my great grandchildren and the baby has been at school for a year now - maybe it's time I changed the photo!

Welcome to rootschat, Northumberland daughter.  We are usually a friendly bunch and don't ignore newcomers but we seem to have missed this one.

Have a look through the Northumberland pages - there have been many references to local photographs over the years.

A little later than you though when cotton was more freely available

Please do.  It sounds like something my 'Battery' friends would like to attend - and me, of course!

Cancelled?  That's a shame

The beach was out of bounds to the public during the war, Tricia, so no sea bathing then.

Funny how no-one ever forgets liberty bodices  ;D

The sea water used to make the woolen knitted swimsuits very harsh and scratchy as well as totally unsuitable for purpose.  I reckon wooly vest and knickers would be equally unsuitable and also uncomfortable.
