England / George Edward Hood
« on: Wednesday 18 January 23 09:27 GMT (UK)  »
Apart from a misleading 1911 census "everything" is known about my grandfather (no research needed). He married Clara May Prior in 1917 as a bachelor.

In 1911 census the following.

George Edward Hood 30 Fancy Tie Maker born Hoxton (age out by 3 years)
Rose Hood 35 Fancy Tie Maker born Birmingham  (Married 5 years)
William Ingram 21 Brother in Law--Ledgers Clerk born Hoxton.

I have never found an "alleged" marriage to Rose and wonder just who she is. William Ingram I believe to be William John Ingram (born 21/4/1889 mmn Brookes/Brooks)who married Clara Janet Smith in 1915. On this marriage cert he name's his father as Joseph Bromley Ingram. I believe their marriage to be dq 1884 Kings Norton, Joseph Ingram/Rhoda Brookes.

So is the 1911 census saying that William Ingram is George's brother in law via his wife Rose.

I cannot make any links,

John

England / 1939 war register.

William Hood appears on this register on Anc*with a dob 13.11.1898 with wife Lilian and 2 redacted names. He also appears on this register on FindMyPast with I believe his daughter Joyce L whom I have her birth cert with dob 27.9.1920. Not being able to view the FindMyPast image does it possibly give a future married name.

United States of America / Joyce Lillian Hood
« on: Tuesday 10 January 23 17:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, parents William & Lillian Rose, both of whom died in Santa Cruz. Parents were in the Uk until 1956 electoral registers. No trace of Joyce in 1939 (may be redacted with parents)

Joyce Lilian Hood
1920–1985
BIRTH 27 SEP 1920 • Chingford Essex

Joy Hollander  Death certificate confirms dob and parents names. Husband recorded as Norman Hollander

DEATH 4 MAR 1985 • Santa Cruz California

Any info re her "possible" marriage to Norman and any children would be most helpful.

Thanks

John

England / Not just another name
« on: Wednesday 04 January 23 13:56 GMT (UK)  »
I over the new year period decided to reminisce and watched "Zulu". Out of 139 men who fought in this battle 11 were awarded the Victoria cross. I decided to look at one individual who was "just a private" Arthur Henry (Harry) Hook-(6 August 1850 – 12 March 1905)

There are several trees on Anc* with & about him as well as info on the web.

I bet when he was a boy he never thought he would be in a film  :), never alone a hero in later life.

It made me afresh realise/ recognise when helping to research for other's that these are real people, with real lives and stories to tell. We perhaps never know apart from dates the lives that these people led but all are important to their families.

I have been trying to help someone with this man.

UK census records from 1891-1921 suggests he was born Tiago County PA

1939 uk war register records a dob of 28th April 1873.

In 1891 census his mother is shown as Mary.

He marries in 1899 in Bridgend, Wales to a Margaret Richards (she is shown as being born in Pennsylvania on 1901 census)

Without having to purchase marriage certificate which would/should name his father can anyone find his birth in the USA

Thanks

John

Added, just found this in 1880 us census that might help. In 1891 uk census William had a sister Mary aged 23 born Wales and his mother Mary was aged 45.

The Lighter Side / The "Thin Air Register"
« on: Thursday 21 July 22 12:21 BST (UK)  »
I like a lot of other's wonder if there is a Thin Air Register where our ancestors go for period's of time. If so are they available on any pfy sites? I have also searced for men who were bricklayers and makers and wonder if they are buried in their constructions sometimes ;D
