Charles William BAKER married Mary Ellen MITCHERSON in Christchurch in 1889. There are a number of possibilities for children on the NZBDM website. One probable is Winifred Helena born 1896.

Ian C

Not knowing where in Christchurch your Baker's were living, this lass lived in Fitzgerald Street, and attended Richmond School on 27 Jan 1903.  Birth date was put down as 14 March 1896.  Unfortunately parent was listed as Mrs Baker, which is of no help to see who she belonged to.

There is the Auckland Miscellaneous Files, (1908) where he is mentioned. Is it worth looking at?  You will see there is a mention of a Thornally.  John's daughter is mentioned as well.  I have no idea what it would tell you.

He does seem to disappear after 1902 when he appears in the Street Directory.  I note that in 1890 in the E/R he was a Boatman.  What did that entail?

Just thinking out loud, perhaps he didn't leave NZ, could there perhaps have been an accident involving water?

Just for the record, the name of the Nodder who signed this is actually 'Annie Nodder', not Elizabeth. 'Of Arch Hill'.

My apologies I should have checked further!

I thought you said in your original post you had him arriving 1855.

Where he is a seaman, on the 1855 Jury List, so who was the arrival in 1862?

Is your head still buzzing with all the finds Lu?

TadlowNewell might have to sit back with a glass of something while reading?

Just want to try and rule this guy out - especially from early NZ records - (I think there was only one Thomas NODDER present in Wellington - but shoot me if I'm wrong ].   ;D

Thought I was going to be shot when I saw the 1890 Farmer Thomas Nodder ;D

Though to be honest it is hard when we search and two people share the same name, and of course, the elimination dance comes in. ;D :D
