thanks, Reg, interesting site! had a quick look - will go back.

Daisy loo, I looked up his records in the National Archive - they have copies of all the stuff from Kew.
If he didn't serve in Galway, how come Galway is mentioned in his service record?
.... your guess is as good as mine!!

I'll follow up that email presently -thanks for taking the trouble

I was looking at older Thoms directories today in the library (sometimes there's a bit of confusion in them - the list of traders sometimes isn't updated as quickly as the streets..)

1860 67 Britain st, Gt is rebuilding
....... at 88 Britain St gt there's REID, Joseph N., watch & clockmaker, over Callaghan's bakery .. seems to be S side of St between Sackville (now O'Connell) St and Marlborough St.

1870 88 Britain St gt - REID, Joseph N still there - no mention of bakery

1873 21 Parliament st. Joseph N. REID, watchmaker and jeweller
 ...... ... & Vincent REID watchmaker

1875 he's not on the list of watchmakers, but is on the list of jewellers,
...... ..... but I can't actually find him (or Vincent).

at the Gilbert Library today looked up the Peter Dunnes.

There were 8 Peter Dunn / Dunne.
4 before 1860 (too early?) and 1 about 1908 (too late)
I'll just mention the other 3.

RIC no ... period covered (from J.H.s other book)

38188 ... ~1871-72
44681 ... Sep 1878-Dec 1879
53690 ... 1889 early in the year?

this last would only have him serving 5 years at marriage ..... but one of my lot married after 6 yrs, obviously kept it secret, and married her again the next yr in a different church!

hi CALPE

putting this here rather than a PM to keep everyone in the picture.

I looked at the digitised Electoral Register today - disappointing!

No James Clare in 5 Echlin St for 1937-38 .. there was James and Mary Clare in 16 (2) Canal Pl North with a note "also at 8 Echlin st"

I haven't quite figured out how to browse through the streets yet - so couldn't look at everyone in Echlin St.

next time I'll try chasing up the James Clares at the other addresses you gave me.

hi Daisy Loo
Yes, I'm living in Ireland. I presume it's the West Indies - I've not heard of the islands on the west coast being called Leeward (and I seem to remember that there were few, if any, police on them until fairly recently). Do you mean the Garda Museum in Dublin Castle?

the bit in quotes was taken direct from his RIC record. I've looked at several RIC records, and usually Cond seems to mean "connected" e.g. Cond in Cork often means that his wife was from there (his wife wasn't, though he probably had cousins there.)

According to his record, he didn't serve in Galway, and was a Sergeant when he was in Mayo.

My imagination was thinking - did the RIC train some West Indies policemen in Galway??? - did some RIC men go to West Indies???

I hoped some Leeward Islander might know ............?

Other Countries / MONTSERRAT: Leeward Islands Police - **COMPLETED THANKS **
« on: Wednesday 03 December 08 21:04 GMT (UK)  »
Thomas Gray was a policeman (RIC) in Ireland until he retired in 1899 aged about 35. I've quite a lot of info on him before 1899 - it's afterwards that I draw a blank! (he would retire just before the 1901 census!!)

his RIC record has the comment ....
 "having been Cond in Cork
Appt Sergt Major Galway and Mayo
in the Leeward Islands Police"

I think Cond means "connected"

does anyone know anything about the Leeward Islands Police?
did Irish men go there ?to train police there?

any suggestions?

if you look at the list of parishes covered by dublinheritage, it doesn't cover (as faras I can see) St Mary's(CofI) Mary St or St Mary's Pro-cathedral(RC) or St Pauls Arran Quay, which would be likely possible churches for someone living in Gt Britain St.

So don't give up! The National Library certainly has ProCathedral and St Paul's records
