Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Is it Howard or Steward
« on: Tuesday 29 September 09 20:54 BST (UK)  »
I'd say it is almost certainly Steward. Compare it with the Stephens marriage on 20th Dec of the same year (top of next page).  If the first letter was "H" it would have a loop on the right hand vertical.

Hope this helps  :D

Hi, the second word looks like "services" to me, but the first has me stumped. The letters I'm deciphering don't make any known word....

That's fab!! I'll have to make a journey to Durham at some point anyway, but I'd like to go equipped with as much info as possible. I suspect that these ancestors were from outside of the parish, as I can't find baptisms for them, so I'm hoping the allegations will tell me where they were from.

Thanks for your help,

Thanks for your replies on this everyone. What I was hoping to find out was if British Origins are the only source of marriage licence allegations. All the information on Genuki directs me to the Vicar General website which in turn takes me to British Origins. The only problem is that they don't have any information on the licence I am after. Does this mean it's lost forever?

Northumberland / Marriage by licence - Newcastle

Hi. I'm having trouble tracking down the allegations for a marriage by licence at St John Newcastle in 1812. I've searched on the British Origins website,  and the marriage appears in the Boyds register but not the Vicar General register.
Is the British Origins information complete, or does anyone know of an alternative source for marriage licence allegations?

Hi Harli

I also have a birth certificate without a father's name (for my great grandmother) and the registrar has added her mother's occupation in that box.

Could it say "nurse"?
