Derbyshire Lookup Requests / George Dowd-No trace after 1901
« on: Friday 08 December 17 21:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All.

I am looking for my G G Uncle George Dowd born circa 1888, living in Derby in 1901 with the rest of the family.

However I cannot find a record on FreeBMD for a birthplace/Date or his whereabouts after 1901.1901 Census says born in Derby.
Any help gratefully received as usual.

There are school records for the children. With one big exception - the mysterious George!
Derby British School, Orchard Street School
Father Edward
Maria Dowd, born 19 March 1883
Mary Ellen Dowd, born 21 Nov 1884
James Dowd, 20 May 1888 (one record says 20.5.87)
Margaret Dowd, born 11 June 1890
Edward Dowd, born 28 March 1894
Elizabeth Dowd, born 6 July 1896 (1901 admission) or 20 May 1896 (1903 admission)
Martin Dowd, born 4 or 14 August 1899  (from admissions in 1902 and 1906)

Edward Dowd was admitted 27.4.97, residence C.11 Walker Lane

James' birth is on the GRO index in 1888 as DOUD, mmn Ford.

Catherine's death is also in 1888 and also as Doud.

Not finding anything for a George though.

Wow, I wasnt aware of a younger Catherine. If she is one of 'mine'. Thanks for the info.

So are you saying you have no marriage or death for him? I can't see a death on the CWGC site.

It was his brother James who died in WW1

1901 - living with parents Edward & Catherine.

There is no birth registration for him or brother James.  1901 shows him aged 13 b Derbyshire and James aged 11 also Derbyshire

Brother Martin aged 1 has mothers maiden name Ford and there is an 1884 marriage in Lincolnshire between Edward Dowd & Kate Ford but GRO online show no male Dowd/Ford births 1887-1889

1891 census does not have George in household and as there are children born before 1884 - Edward was presumably married previously.  In 1881 Edward is unmarried

Edward Dowd   42 b All Saints Derbyshire
Kate 32 b Birmingham
Charlotte    10 b Alfreston
Maria C    8 b Lincoln
Mary Ellen    6 b Lincoln mmn Ford
James 2 b St Alkmund
Margaret 10mths St Alkmund - mmn = Ford

A Catherine Dowd was b 1886 Derbyshire - no death but she is not on 1891
Hi again CaroleW. These people were first named Doud in 1841 Census then progressed onto Dowd then onto me O'Dowd!I do have James' B/C stating he was born in May 1888 so older brother George must have been born a couple of years earlier.
