The Medal Roll Index has 5 entries for George Dowd and one for George E in various regiments.  If he was from Derbyshire it's a possibility he enlisted in a Yorkshire regiment for which there are 2 entries

The MRI does not show birthplaces - only rank, regiment and service number

What regiment was his brother in?
His brother James was in the Sherwood Foresters Notts and Derby Regt.

Hi All..I have an ancestor of fighting age in 1914 but I cant find any record of him 'joining up'.
I realise he may not have enlisted etc but was conscription compulsory during this time?

His brother signed up at an early age  and ultimately died as a POW.

Any suggestions??

Nice to see pictures of Spike Island. My great grandad was based there for some time and was resident when he met my Great Grandmother,a Cork lady.

Hi Moderaters/All
I hope you don't mind me putting this link to the website I have been introduced but I think it is an absolute gem.
I have gleaned a lot of information off it with regards to one of my ancestors and think it ought to be shared(if not already been done).

Best regards
Dowdy
