Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Witness to an 1817 Tamworth, Staffs Marriage
« on: Tuesday 29 December 15 22:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Chatters:

Would appreciate some help with the signature of Witness 1 on this Parish Record for an 1817 Marriage in Tamworth Staffordshire. It's not similar to either of the surnames for the bride (Phillips) and groom (Bown).

Wondered if the first name was - John - but I'm stuck on the surname.

The Lighter Side / Interesting Marriage Entry
« on: Thursday 10 December 15 18:13 GMT (UK)  »
Saw this in a Staffordshire marriage register. Made me wonder at what point the Curate realised something was up  ;)

20 Oct 1810 - Thomas Finney and Sarah Baker marry. Witnesses: John Baker and William Darlaston.

But before that, on 15 Oct 1810, there is a crossed out marriage entry for Thomas Finney and Sarah Baker with Witnesses James Baker and Alice Ridding. Written at the bottom of the register is the reason why the marriage was not allowed.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Marks used for Signing
« on: Friday 04 December 15 16:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Chatters:

When transcribing I often see an 'X' or 'O' or '+' used as someone's mark. Recently came across a very different mark that looked like a '5' or a 'G'.

It got me wondering how it is decided what mark someone uses. Does anyone have any ideas on this or know of any resources that cover making a mark as your signature?

United States of America / Brigida and Maria Di Giacomo
« on: Wednesday 02 December 15 20:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Chatters:

This is my first foray into US records and I need your help  :)

I have been trying to find out more information on Italian born Brigida (b. 1869) and Maria (b. 1860) Di Giacomo. I have them on the 1940 US census (Ohio/Cuyahoga/Cleveland City/Ward 15). Bridget is widowed and Mary is single.

I have them entering the US through Ellis Island in Nov 1914. Both going to Brigida's husband Pietro in Cleveland Ohio. But I can't seem to find anything else about them.

Can anyone help?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Ellen's Occupation
« on: Thursday 10 September 15 21:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi Chatters:

Any ideas on Ellen's occupation on this 1874 marriage register? The only thing I see is 'Stationer' and I'm wondering if others see it differently.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Bride's Occupation
« on: Tuesday 25 August 15 02:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi Chatters:

I'm wondering about the bride's occupation on this marriage register. Does anyone think that it is a ditto mark and that she was also a Potter?

The Lighter Side / A Belated Thank you
« on: Monday 24 August 15 04:31 BST (UK)  »
Here's a very belated Thank you to the Curate or other church official who helpfully wrote out the name of a witness on an 1871 marriage register. It would have been tough for anyone to figure this signature out.
