Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Re: Help needed reading a census image

They seem to have mis-transcribed James age 12 as Garret and Maria age 7 as Margia. This is not unusual for Ancestry, especially with such a faded image.

Hi Ambly,
I have a 'possible' for the 1861 census: RG9/3464 109 15 - Fir Street, Nether Hallam. This is not far from where a lot of your other PEACE families lived. On the website I use she is indexed as Mary S PEAD but I have looked at the image and am conviced that it is PEACE. She is listed as a general servant to Henry A RAWSON 25 carpenter YKS Sheffield and his wife Hannah 21 YKS Sheffield.
  Hope this helps - Dave

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Sheffield cutlery occupations

Hi All,
At long last I have a famous ancestor ;D. The Bernard Whiting mentioned at the end of the article was my G Uncle ( and, yes Maggie, he was related by marriage to my Simonites :D ).

What the article dosn't seem to make clear is what scales are in this context. They are the 'side pieces' on pen and pocket knives that cover the metal body and are usually plastic on modern knives. Also I have a vague memory of reading that pen knives and pocket knives are two distinct types of knife, something to do with them having blades at one end only or at both ends.

Hi All,
The National Archives (catalogue ref. WO97/106/62) has Charles PEACE born SHEFFIELD, Yorkshire served in 11th Dragoons discharged age 29. Covering dates are 1843 to 1852.
The WO97 series is mainly soldiers discharged to pension as invalids or witha disabling injury.

What is shown as Williams 'condition' on the certificate for his second marriage ? Is he a widower ? I'm not an expert but I would have thought there would be some attempt to contact next-of-kin after a ships sinking.

Hi Ambly,
It is more likely that Philadelphia is the area of Sheffield with the same name.

Hi Ambly,
Sorry, I have no info on PEACE in Sheffield, but being a 'local lad' the name caught my attention.
