Leicestershire / Re: John Akiens 1795-1845 Belgrave
« on: Friday 23 February 24 17:52 GMT (UK)  »
I thought I was losing the plot when I couldn't find anything related to my Akiens family from the details on the family trees I saw.

I know that feeling!

let us know if you want any more details of what I found.

I can't find anything to back up the dates on those trees, no deaths either, so I'm beginning to think they fished them out of the air!

Looking at baptisms on FindMyPast and on the LRFHS CD, I can see a total of 8 children with parents John and Susannah, and surname Akin, Akins, Aikin, Aikins, Akiens. (there's one other likely one with surname Atkins). The dates of these baptisms run from 1815 - 1833, and they're all at Leic St Margaret, which would suggest to me that they belong to the couple who married there in 1814 as per my previous post.

I can see an ancestry tree which has this family on and links back to Belgrave for Dad, and gives Thacker as Susanna's maiden name. But it doesn't give any sources for this. It links to the 1841 census showing the Akiens family in St Margaret which matches the one above.

Have you tried contacting them to see where they got their info? I'm not sure it would be very helpful though as the "sources" to which they've linked seem to be other Ancestry trees ---

I can't see any records of people with that surname at Belgrave in the time period suggested (even allowing for variant spellings). I'm looking on FindMyPast, are there Belgrave records which haven't made it onto there?

There were Atkins and Adkins, could they be connected?

I can't see a marriage between John and Susannah THACKER either, maybe I'm going a bit doolally?
There was a marriage between John AKINS and Susannah GREEN at St Margaret, Leic (both OTP) on 28 March 1814 but no others that even vaguely match that I can see. Perhaps someone else will have sharper eyes!

The Common Room / Re: Can anyone trace Adelaide Springett?
« on: Tuesday 20 February 24 18:50 GMT (UK)  »
I've said it before, but I had absolutely no idea when I started this thread that it would lead to all this!

Adelaide's picture touched my heart and it's so good to know the rest of her story, even if it's not all rosy (I guess we never thought it would be).

Hello yvdc,welcome to rootschat.

This is an old thread and one that wasn't that busy in the first place. YOu might be better off starting another thread of your own with the information that you've given us.

Good luck in your search.

The Common Room / Re: Nephews and Great Nephews in wills before 1800
« on: Thursday 15 February 24 14:10 GMT (UK)  »
Yes, I think that I've ssen wills where someone is described as a nephew when they could only have been a great nephew.

Similarly, "cousin" could be considerably more flexible that we might expect.

"Brothers" and "sisters" could be inlaws, or even the siblings of inlaws.

Daughter in law could be stepdaughter  (ditto son)

etc etc!

The Common Room / Re: Holyland/Woolsgrove link? Can anyone help? COMPLETED, THANKS!
« on: Tuesday 13 February 24 13:34 GMT (UK)  »
I've looked at the signature of "Thos Holyland" on both marriage registers (Desford, 1793, and Westminster, 1803) and I'm pretty sure they're the same. So thank you! Another puzzle solved!

Deborah Dennis was buried at Ashby on July 4 1848, age 81 (so YOB 1767).

She is in the 1841 census age 70, with Henry, a grocer age 60, daughter Deborah age 25, and a male servant.

Joseph Timms baptised Shakerstone August 19 1792, son of Joseph and Debaro Timms.

Joseph Timms (of the parish of Shackerstone) and Deborah Cockram OTP were married at St Helens, Ashby de la Zouch on 10 Nov 1791, witnesses Saml Cockram and Wm Rice (or maybe Price?). Both signed their names.

I can't see any more children for this couple, so this burial may be significant:

Joseph Timms; Ashby de la Zouch, 19 May 1793

then this marriage:

Deborah Timms (signed her name) m Henry Dennis, Ashby de la Zouch, 13 April 1800 -- witnesses Joseph Hallam and Walter Joseph Cockram. This couple had 5 children over the next 10 years - Sarah, Samuel, William, another Samuel, and Deborah.
