Dorset Lookup Requests / Re: Death Look up please Bow(e)ring
« on: Thursday 09 July 09 16:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi Meliora
many many thanks for that information, it is really appreciated.  I am fairly new to all this research, and I was given a lot of information from someone else in the family who was doing all this research and of course I thought that everything he gave me was correct...HOW WRONG COULD I BE.

I now find myself going over everything and having to almost restart, but it is a good exercise.
the research I received has Jane Shorto Bowering married with children..oh dear.

I do have one more question if you dont mind.
the page that I have from the parish register does not give a name of a parent, just Janes and the date of burial.  I think now that it may not be the second Jane, as I have been looking and searching and there are quite a few Jane Bowrings all born around that time.  some of them belonging to my relatives and others I am not sure about.  How do I go about finding who the parents were for this infant Jane...do you have any idea.

Once again many thanks..
Cheers
Chris

Dorset Lookup Requests / Death Look up please Bow(e)ring
« on: Thursday 09 July 09 13:50 BST (UK)  »
In recent research I discovered that my 3x Great Grandparents James Bow(e)ring and Anne Jane Shorto had two daughters called Jane.
Up until a few days ago I thought they had only one, and that she was called Jane Shorto Bow(e)ring.   According to Family search IGI she was christened on 12th Sep 1819 in Sydling St Mary's.

Whilst searching for loose ends I came across another entry this time for Jane Bowering daugher of James and Anne.  This Jane was christened on 21 August 1825 again at Sydling St Mary's.

RFef: Film#452886

Ref# 184647.

It also seems that maybe she was one of a twin as her sister Charlotte was christened on the same day as she was.

Now this is where the confusing part comes in.  I have a copy of a page from the parish records that has Jane Bowring's burial listed on it. The date is 1826 and  I think Jan 1st.  She was listed as an infant.
I realise that quite often they gave their children the named of a deceased child, does that mean that the Jane born in 1819 was also deceased as I can find no record of her death at all.

:-\Or is this the death of the first Jane who would of been around 6 years old.  Did they class that age also as an infant.

I would appreciate any help at all with this problem.
Thank you
Chris

I really appreciate the help.  also is it usual for those innotations to be made as it is the first time I have seen anything like that written on a census

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with census please COMPLETED
« on: Sunday 05 July 09 12:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
Can some kind soul have a look at a census for me, and help me to transcribe what it says.
William Bowering b 1813

1871 Census  Fleet Dorset, Subdistrict Weymouth
RG10   Piece2004    Folio 53  Page 7

On Williams line the very end column, Does it read 'Invalid Cancer'

Also William's Son Frederick has an annotation after the relation column in the Condition column.  I am not sure what this reads at all.  ??? could it be unmarried?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Jellyby,
I am not sure if it is one of 'my'Axons or not.  I know a couple of the chaps served but as of yet have not got that far with the 'outer relatives' as I call them, but I would love to see it.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Can't decipher occupation in census
« on: Saturday 13 June 09 12:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi I was wondering if someone could look up a census record and help me to decipher the occupation.  It looks simple but I am not sure.
In the 1861 Census from Winterborne St Martin.  R.G. 9/1356  Folio 145 Pg 13
James Critchell aged 33 born in Martinstown.

I am not sure what his occupation is, I have come up with a couple of versions.  Maltman, Milkman, or maybe even millman.  I am just not sure and I would really appreciate some help.
Cheers

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Lookup Please Elias Harrison Crich Derbyshire
« on: Monday 02 February 09 07:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I am hoping some one can help with the tracing of my 3 Great Grandfather Elias Harrison.
According to the 1851 census for boleskine and Abertarff Census in Scotland, he was born in Crich Derbyshire.
According to the 1841 census he should of been born in 1781 as he was listed as being 60 years of age.
The 1851 census and his death record has him born in 1777.
The only IGI record that I have come across is for an Elias, christened on 20 Dec  1772 born to Abraham Harrison in Cullen Wirksworth.
I do not know where to search now ???

Sometime between his birth and 1815 he married a Margaret Mclea and they ended up in Scotland as keepers of Kytra Lock.

One family member thought he was told that Elias worked on the locks in Derbyshire...but I have no idea at all when he was born.

I would appreciate some advice on where to search now, or if anyone has any information that would be great.
Cheers
Chris
