Hi, I have Family Historian full Version 5 at the moment and am thinking of maybe buying Version 6 but not being very technical, to say the least, I'm wondering if I will need to uninstall my current version 5 and then install version 6, or can I install version 6 over version 5.
For family reasons I've not been able to regulary use family historian or do any research much in the last 18 months or so, and I've got out of it a bit.
I've looked on FHUG re their installation advice but it seems to apply more to  installing the programme on a new PC as opposed to installing an upgraded version on current PC. (but I've maybe read it wrong).
Any advice from Rootschatters who may have installed from V5 to V6 would be welcome please.

Thanks

Barbara.

Technical Help / cannot copy/paste in aol mail since windows 10.
« on: Sunday 17 January 16 20:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am no longer able to copy/paste into Aol mail (9.7)

I've been trying to paste a Rootschat post link into an email for a relative but as soon as I try to paste in the link - aol shuts down then restarts.

I tried to find some help thru AoL support but can't because I'm not a paying member - I just have AoL mail.

Has anyone else had/got this problem?

Any help would be appreciated.

Lancashire / Susannah Starkie/ Moore, Ashton in Makerfield.
« on: Wednesday 13 January 16 15:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, My Gt Gt Aunt by marriage was  born Susannah Starkie in 1854, in Ashton in Makerfield.

She married a Joseph Moore in 1877 whom I believe died in 1883 in Ashton in Makerfield.

She then married my Gt Gt Uncle Thomas Howell in 1902, still in Ashton in Makerfield and she passed away there in 1918.

Apart from the notes above I know nothing about Susannah but I would really like to so I'm hoping that someone out in Ashton who has the family name of Starkie or Moore in their history may be able to help me if they recognise Susannah as a relative of theirs.

Thanks in hope

Technical Help / how to restore default display settings in Windows 10.
« on: Monday 30 November 15 13:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, need some advice please.

I was messing about in display settings on my windows 10 laptop and I have somehow managed to mess up the size of the text  (made it too small) and I would like to return it to the default?settings it was before.

I've tried to do it by going into the Display Settings >Customise Display but I've been unable to change it because the 'Apply' and 'Cancel' buttons are greyed out.

Is there a way of returning the settings to their original state before I messed it up.

I'm not good at tech problems but is there someone who could advise please?

Thanks

Technical Help / DVD Drive gone missing since windows 10 upgrade - help please.
« on: Tuesday 06 October 15 16:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I think I hate windows 10.

Since upgrade early August I've had no end of problems on my Laptop which is an HP Pavilion g series 3.6 years old. (and was Windows 7 !!)

Because I've not had much spare time in the last few weeks, I've only recently noticed that my DVD Drive is no longer showing.

I've got Windows DVD player listed amongst my windows apps but when I clicked on it I got a message saying "To play something insert a DVD". I did but there was no response whatsoever, which was when I looked at my list of Drives in ' This PC' and discovered that the DVD Drive had gone AWOL.

A few days ago I had a message popped up saying "Error, Critical Process Died". Was that my DVD Drive I wonder?
I'm not good with tech problems so could one of the Rootschat Tech Experts help/ advise me please,
I don't want to try and afford a new Laptop if I can avoid it.

Help please.

Technical Help / Laptop freaking out with Windows 10.
« on: Saturday 05 September 15 09:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Oh Boy, my Laptop seems to have gone completely haywire since I upgraded to Windows 10 at the beginning of August.

I have an HP Pavilion g series Laptop purchased end of 2012 and have had no major problems with it until the Windows 10 upgrade.

It freezes at frequent intervals and sometimes becomes completely unresponsive, to the extent that I cannot even turn the power off - I have to resort to turning off by pressing the button.

I also get sudden messages telling me that my pc has encountered a problem and will restart my pc.Off it goes and then restarts and works until the next freeze up or calamity occurs!!

Also, just for good measure, when Skypeing occasionally I'll suddenly get a noise like a pneumatic drill gone berserk which freezes the laptop &lasts for a few seconds before reverting to normal !!!

Is it my particular make of Laptop or do others have these problems.

Wish in a way that I'd never upgraded.

Hi, I'm hoping that if I'm lucky enough to find a Rootschatter living in or near Lawrence City, Kansas, they might be kind enough to help me clear up a family mystery please.

I live in the U.K. and I've just obtained the following burial details for a person I believe to be my Gt Aunt who died as a child in or near Lawrence,Kansas, America, sometime between 1871 & 1875.
Details are as follows;
Name: Howell, Alice Mary.
Burial date: 10/15/1871.
Lot Owner: Howell,Alice Mary.
Cemetery: Oakhill - Section 4 - Lot info- Reserve Grave - Row 214 - Lot  ID 13556.

I believe that Lawrence City Library  holds the Oakhill Cemetery Records  details etc but although I e mailed them twice last year through their on-line facility in the hope that I might get a copy of the Internment Card/ Burial details, I'm afraid I had no acknowledgement or reply to my request.

I have been searching for her burial place for a long time so I would be very grateful if someone would be kind enough to help me by visiting the Library for me and possibly obtaining a copy of the Internment Card/Burial Details please,so that I can see if it is indeed the grave of my Gt Aunt and hopefully clear up the mystery of when she died and where she is buried..

Thanks very much.

Hi, if anyone out there uses Family Historian 5, could they please advise me on how to use the "How Related"Tool please.

I'm trying to see how my Grandaughter is related to her Father's second cousin but the tool insists on putting my name(I am the Root person ) in one of the 2 available name boxes so I am unable to enter the 2 names that I need to relate.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Technical Help / Lost the Sound with Windows 10. Help please.
« on: Tuesday 11 August 15 16:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Just upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

I thought it had upgraded smoothly, most things seemed o.k but I've just discovered that I don't have any sound.

When I click on the volume icon on the task bar it show 'Speakers(Realtek High Definition Audio 100%) but no sound!!.

I don't know how to fix it, I'm not a bit technical, I'd be grateful if someone could help please.

Thanks.

Barbara.
