Canada / Re: Scotland to Toronto - Hamilton
« on: Friday 24 February 06 15:53 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks to you both for taking an interest.
I pretty sure his wife was Elizabeth McDonald b approx 1886, she was born in Glasgow and lived at 22 Abercorn Street in 1891. The other sisters are much too old.
I'll take a look at the newspaper site when I've narrowed down the year.
From double checking with my Mum ALex's daughter was called May not Ruth.

Thanks again

Canada / Scotland to Toronto - Hamilton
« on: Wednesday 22 February 06 14:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to get more information on my gguncle and his family who emigrated to Canada from Scotland in the early 1900's (I think it was around 1905 but my Mum says 1911). His name was Alexander Hamilton and he had two children I am aware of, a son Bertram and a daughter who I think was called Ruth. Alex married a McDonald (my ggrandmothers sister) either in Scotland just before he emigrated or shortly after arriving - I've been told his wife went on a 'bride's ticket'. They settled in Scarborough, Toronto and he lived in the house he built for them all his life. I visited him there in 1984 and he was then nearing his 100th birthday. He definitely made it to 100 but I don't know exactly when. The only other things I know about them is Bertram went to work in Bolivia and then lived in Florida (Alex spent his last winters there) and Ruth worked as a nurse in Venezuela.

Can anyone expand on this please.

England / Re: William Bamford

Hi,

I think your best bet is to invest in a certificate, either William's birth or marriage certificate, either should give you his father's name (the birth would give his mother too if you wanted to check that side of the family) and you could then look the father up on the 1901 census.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Re: HAPPY CATCHPOLE
« on: Monday 06 February 06 11:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Lee,

Couldn't resist the name!
I found on familysearch website that Happy married Daniel Catchpole 9/3/1795 in Redenhall with Harleston. There is a child Maria Catchpole b 25/12/1805 christened 19/1/1806, couldn't find any others.

Hope it helps

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Re: Mary Adams born abt 1813 Little Wenlock

On the familysearch website there is a marriage of William Adams to Mary Duckett on 7th May 1832 in Little Wenlock. One of the known childrens birth certificates could confirm this.

Thanks for the quick response, I've checked on freebmd and it seems Moses died in 1847. I've ordered William's death certificate to check if its the same one, if it is Elizabeth lost her husband and one of the twins within a couple of months. No sign of what happened to her yet - still looking.

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Wakeley - 1841 look up please
« on: Thursday 02 February 06 14:07 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out what happened to William Wakeley and his wife Elizabeth. I found them from the lds website as parents of Mary, Jabez, Moses and Thomas. On the 1851 census Mary, Jabez and Thomas are visitors with John Jones at Waxhill Barracks - I'm pretty sure they're the same ones as Thomas married a Sarah Bould who is next door on the census. I can't find either William or Elizabeth but I have found a death of a William in 1847.
Can anyone please check them out on the 1841 census for me.

Thanks
Gill

Shropshire / Re: Susannah Groom
« on: Wednesday 01 February 06 18:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Had a look on ancestry for you and found on the 1851 census the son William living with father Francis and presumably his new wife Mary Ann at Arleston. On familysearch I found a Susannah Timis marrying Francis Groom on 24/10/1825 at Dawley Magna.
The most appropriate christening I found was Susannah Timmis 4/8/1805 at Much Wenlock, father William mother Mary.

Hope these fit in with your family.
