Folks, I think I have solved my own mystery.

When you search on the non-conformist records on the National Archives site, it warns you that events may be recorded at more than one location.

I have some ancestors who had the same event ( e.g. a birth) recorded for the same person in 5 separate records, some of which show as "Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire"and others just as Nottinghamshire.

Looks like my Baldock & Hitchen record is one that is recorded in both places - mystery solved, I think.

Thanks Ray,

I'm off to explore that site now.

Hertfordshire / Baldock & Hitchen

Hi, Hoping someone can assist with what is probably a very simple query. One of my ancestor's birth is recorded a being at "Baldock & Hitchen".  (James Gripper, 7 November 1755). I know these are two separate towns and are about 7 miles apart, so I'm guessing that, in 1755 at least, they were a combined parish perhaps?

I'll be grateful for any advice.

Cheers,

Trevor

Hi Maddie - and thanks again for all your help :)

My connection with William Gripper is with his some George, my g. grandfather.

Amusing story here, as George moved to Aberdeen in 1890 and my grandad was born there. My mum and her sisters are quite proud of their Scots heritage and were surprised to hear that it's only one generation old.  The news now that their family name could well be the result of a 'typo' (You and I understand how this can have happened, but try explaining that to 3 sisters aged 75 - 79 or so :) )

This little exercise has resulted in me adding brother and sisters for the first time on my data base tree on Legacy and I'll now continue the practice and, hopefully, find some more leads.

Regards,

Trevor

Hi again Ray and Maddie,

As my membership status shows, I've been at this for a few years, but am a very spasmodic researcher. This is all great information and your theory makes perfect sense Ray.

Maddie, I feel a bit lazy, I admit, but I'd love those burial details your offered for all of those poor children, thank you:)

I wish both of you well, as it looks like my connection with the Gurney family is no connection at all, so I'll look and research elsewhere:)

Thanks again, and kind regards,

trevor

Thanks Ray and Maddie,

I'd been wondering about variations on spelling of the surname, so I'll include searches for GRIPPOR from now on as well.

In the meantime, you've given me some stuff to go on with  -many thanks.

Trevor :)

Hi all,

Here's one I hope someone can help me with.

My ancestor William Gripper shows (I'm pretty sure it's him anyway) in the 1841 Census as living with a family named GURNEY in Rickmansworth. family memories/legends say that he was raised by an aunt after his mother died.

Basic marriage searches don't show any surname link between Gripper and Gurney that I can see and we're going back to the beginnings of census data as well.

Any advice or assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Trevor
