Hello all,

Could someone please check the 1851 census for Elizabeth Bainbridge born c1834 Hutton Rudby. I would like to know the details of the family she was with. And if it's not asking too much, to find her with her parents in 1841, probably John and Ann, and then trace him in 1851 to find his age and birthplace.

I am trying to establish if there is a connection with my Bainbridge lines of Newby near Great Ayton.

I'm probably clutching at straws but I would like to solve a mystery of my G Granddad. He was born at Ovenden, Halifax, Yorkshire on 31.8.1852 (illegitimate).
In 1861 he was living with his Grandparents but age was given as 9. Subsequent census ages are consistent with this, ie 19, 29, 39, but in 1901 he is only 43 (he had re-married and his wife was 33  ;) )
He died of TB on 9.9.1902 when his age was given as 49 and this was confirmed in his Death Notice which also stated he had been with the NER for 37 years. (He was employed as a Clerk.)

His name appears several times in a notebook of the Headmaster of his school and the last entry was in March 1865, so according to the Death Notice this would be approaching his employment.

Can anyone advise on the minimum age for employment as a clerk with the NER, and whether he would have to provide confirmation of age? I'm trying to sort out why he was made to seem a year older than he actually was. Despite exhaustive searches, I haven't found a baptism, even though I found details of his Confirmation in March 1867.

Hello All,

Can anyone help with locating this place. I have a vague recollection of finding it a few years ago in the Bensham area and it consisted of only a few houses, but try as I might I can't find it again.

My Gt Granddad lived at No 3 but died there of TB in 1902. He was a Clerk for NER so it would make sense for it to be near Station.

EDIT: Should have mentioned that he is not there in the 1901 census, he was at East Boldon.

I know this is a difficult one, and it is only an emailed image so I can't show the back, but a rough idea of date would be appreciated.

The name of Uncle Den... gives an idea of who it might be, but I suspect it is the wrong timeframe.

Hello All,

Does anyone happen to know if records are available for these units?

In the newspaper archives, I came across several entries for J. Cruddace, of varying ranks, winning prizes in competitions ( c1883-1895). The units mentioned, match his movements, so I think it could be my G Granddad.

I am particularly interested in finding the 1st (Darlington) and 5th (Gateshead).

I have come across entries in the newspaper archives of Rifle Volunteer competition winners and I'm now beginning to think that my GtGranddad is listed among them. Initially, I thought it wasn't possible because he had a decent job, but could a clerk on the NER also be a Volunteer? Were they only part-timers turning up at week-ends or a couple of days here and there? I can't seem to find much information about the Volunteer Brigades.

The name J Cruddace is not common, and the place names, when given, match my GtG's residences. I have no family stories to fall back on so it might just be another daft idea, and any help or advice would be appreciated.

This one is rather dark and speckled in places, can anyone work their magic on this please?

Would anyone hazard a guess as to which side the hair would tend be parted, and if it would be normal practice to change the side. The reason I ask is that this has happened on the few pictures I have of her, and one appears with a reversed image of itself (ie. 2 pictures).

I seem to recollect that girls parted on the right, and boys on the left.

This is a very special picture of my sister who sadly died at the age of 14 from heart problems. It is an enlargement pasted onto a card back and framed. I have tried to scan it without removing it so if that proves to be a problem then please let me know and I will re-scan.

If you fancy experimenting then feel free.
