Hertfordshire Lookup Requests / 1851 Lookup or WARE Birth Lookup Please
« on: Saturday 15 October 05 03:15 BST (UK)  »
I am wondering if anyone would be able to find a family with the surname WILLS that gave birth to a daughter between 1847 to 1856 by the name of Mary Ann WILLS in Ware District.

This is what I know:

- Marriage has the father listed as Charles WILLS - Labourer
- Mary Ann married in Strood, Kent in 1864 - age 17 to Richard Marshall ATTWATER
- Witnesses to marriage were Jesse & Charlotte TAYLOR'S - unknown relationship to Bride & Groom?
- 1871 census - I have not been able to locate.
- 1881 census has Mary Ann at age 30, born in Ware, Hertfordshire.  (Online has it now listed as Ware, Kent?)
- 1891 census has Mary Ann at age 36 born in Town ware?, Hertford.
- 1901 census has Mary Ann at age 45 born in Ware, Hertfordshire.

Interestingly, in 1881, the son of Mary Ann is listed living with a John Charles WILLS in Rainham, Kent.  When tracing this family, the father of John C. WILLS is Charles WILLS but the entire family is born in Rainham, Kent.  I have traced this family back but they lived in Rainham in 1851.  There is a daughter that may fit but her name is Mary Collingham WILLS born 1848 in Milton District, Kent.

Questions:

Is there a family in Ware, Hertfordshire with a Charles WILLS as head of household in the 1851 census?

Does anyone have access to the PR's for the period of 1847 to 1856 for Ware that could look for a birth for Mary Ann WILLS?

Does anyone know of a link between Hertfordshire and Kent with regards to the surname WILLS?

Any help in solving my mystery would be greatly appreciated.   :-* :-* :-*

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / 1851 Census Lookup Please

In an attempt to find where a family member was living in 1841, I was wondering if someone would be able to find the parents for me on the 1851 census Please:

Richard & Mary CHAMBERS.  Ages unknown.

Richard & Mary christened their daughter Effield CHAMBERS in 1829 in Milton next Sittingbourne.  Effield married William Attwater in 1844 in the same location.

In 1851, William & Effield were living in Hackney, Middlesex but they had a son with them that was born in about 1845 in Sittingbourne.

I have searched the 1841 census of Milton next Sittingbourne, and Sittingbourne with no luck.  If anyone could find Richard & Mary Chambers on the 1851, I may be able to look for them in the same location in the 1841 census.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.   :-*

England / GRO Reference question
« on: Saturday 01 October 05 18:05 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me if the following is possible.  It may be a long explanation but my question is at the end:

I have a family member (James HYDE) that I am trying to confirm who he married.  (Second marriage)

I have found two possible individuals.  Elizabeth PENFOLD and Elizabeth COOPER.  I have found the marriage reference for Elizabeth Penfold:

Marriages Mar 1896, Hyde  James    Dartford  2a 587
Marriages Mar 1896, Penfold  Elizabeth     Dartford  2a 587

Now here is where it gets tricky.  Family lore has it that one of James son's went to live with an Aunt when he was young and took on her surname (COOPER).  I have since found the 1901 census and it looks like Frances is a step-son and may have been born out of wedlock by Elizabeth COOPER prior to her marriage to James HYDE:

1901 Census:  (Transcription Error - HYDE)

RG13/710/16, Folio 27, Page 9, Household # 50

4 Market Cottage, Longfield, Kent, England

James Hayde 61  Shepperton, Middlesex, England Head  b? setter
Elizabeth Hayde 33  Sunbury, Middlesex, England Wife
Edwin Hayde 23  Shepperton, Middlesex, England Son    blacksmith labourer
Edgar Hayde 4  Longfield, Kent, England Son
Frances Cooper 7  Longfield, Kent, England Stepson  *****
Elsie Cooper 4  Minster Isle Of Thanet Niece
________________________________

I have searched everywhere I could for a marriage of James HYDE to Elizabeth COOPER but could not find one.

Then I went to the 1881 census and looked for births of these two possible individuals.  I could not believe it but they both have the same birth reference?

Penfold, Elizabeth 1868 March Staines Middlesex 3a 2
Births Mar 1868, Cooper  Elizabeth    Staines  3a 2

Is it possible that one person could have two references under different names if there was an adoption or second marriage of the parents involved or am I grasping at straws?

Bye the way, the birth location in 1881 for Elizabeth COOPER matches the 1901 census data so I highly suspect that COOPER is correct.

Thanks for reading,
Nancy

It is suspected that Elizabeth had a child out of wedlock in about 1894 by the name of Frank or Francis COOPER and was possibly born in Longfield, Kent?  I have not been able to locate this birth.  Due to this, I do not know if Elizabeth was still in Middlesex during the 1891 census or if she moved there after 1891.

Thank you,

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1891 Census Lookup - SHEPLEY
« on: Saturday 17 September 05 21:05 BST (UK)  »
I have a family member that may have married a second time and I would love to have the 1891 census results to be able to confirm if it may be him.

Thomas SHEPLEY was born about 1835 in Oldham, Lancashire.  The following information is the last census I have found him in:

1881 Census:

Dwelling: 480 Huddersfield Road, Oldham, Lancashire, England

Source: FHL Film 1341977, PRO Ref RG11, Piece 4083, Folio 135, Page 24

Thomas Shepley, Head, Engineer (Dr 22), M, 45, Oldham, Lancashire, England  ********
Margeret Shepley, Wife, M, 46, F, Oldham, Lancashire, England
William H Shepley, Son, Cotton Minder, U, 21, M, Oldham, Lancashire, England
Joseph Shepley, Son, Cotton Minder, U, 20, M, Oldham, Lancashire, England
Harriet Shepley, Daughter, Speed Tenter, U, 17, F, Oldham, Lancashire, England
Thomas Shepley, Son, Cotton Piecer, U, 13, M, Oldham, Lancashire, England
Ada Mary Shepley, Daughter, Scholar, U, 9, F, Oldham, Lancashire, England
___________________________________________

In 1886, Thomas's wife, Margaret died.  I have since found the following possible marriage entry:

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1887

SHEPLEY * Thomas
KAY Jane
Waterhead, Holy Trinity Oldham CE246/2/94

SHEPLEY * Thomas
HILL Jane
Waterhead, Holy Trinity Oldham CE246/2/94

***Based on this, Jane's maiden name was KAY & this is her second marriage.

Would it be possible for someone to look for Thomas & Jane SHEPLEY on the 1891 census?  Thomas lived his entire life in Oldham so I would suspect that he would be there.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.   :-*

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / 1901 Census - Lambeth - Question
« on: Sunday 11 September 05 14:58 BST (UK)  »
Would anyone with access to the 1901 census be able to look at the image for me and let me know if the following person is listed as a widow please:

RG13/404, Folio 8, Page 7, Household 48

Rose Tilbury, Age 57, Nurse.

I have been unable to find her husband, Henry TILBURY, Age 59.  Rose was a Nurse back in the 1861 census.  After she married Henry, she was only listed as a wife and now I find her Nursing in 1901.  I would appreciate any information on her from the census other than what I have listed above.  Thank you in advance.   :-*

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Marriage Look up - Lenham or Sittingbourne?
« on: Saturday 10 September 05 07:25 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for further information on the marriage of the following couple:

1851 Census:

HO107/1627, Folio 213, Page 18
66 Water Lane, Sittingbourne, Kent, England

Thomas Dean, Head, Mar, 27, Groom, Sittingbourne, Kent
Sarah Dean, Wife, Mar, 25, Lenham, Kent
Hannah Dean, Daur, 1, Lenham, Kent

The daughter Hannah was born in Sittingbourne and not Lenham as noted in the census.  Would anyone have access to the parish registers or an index that may be able to better pinpoint where and when the marriage took place?  A maiden name would be kindly appreciated for Sarah if that is at all possible.  Thank you.   :-*
