Cork / Re: Cronin - Ireland to Canada

Thanks for the info Kated.   ;)  Unfortunately at this time I don't have the time to travel to a FHS.  I don't have their marriage certificate or the info needed to get one.  I think they were married in Peterborough, Ontario as this is where my mother was born but I am not sure of this.  I really don't know the first place to even look for birth marriage or death information in Canada when you don't know a date.  I may just have to put this line on hold till more information becomes available online.  Thanks for your time in answering my question. ;)

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Trying to prove second marriage - Help Please
« on: Sunday 07 November 04 16:43 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to prove a second marriage which would link a whole new branch to my tree.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is what I know:

Willam Attwater - born June 4, 1826 in Halstow, Kent.
1878 - Marriage reference found for Agnes COVENEY to William Attwater in Canterbury & Swale District (Kent registration services)  A little confusing as I thought her name was Agnes FRANCES.
1833 - Estimated birth year for Agnes - Ospring, Kent
1881 census - Sittingbourne with wife Agnes.
1891 census - Sittingbourne with wife Agnes.
1901 census - Sittingbourne with wife Agnes.
Buried with William in Sittingbourne Cemetery.

This is what I suspect:

Possible first marriage:  1844 to Effield CHAMBERS in Canterbury & Swale District (Kent registration services)
IGI birth for Effield - 25 JAN 1829   Milton Next Sittingbourne, Kent, England
1871 census - Faversham with wife Effield
1876 - Death reference found on Free BMD (March Quarter, 1876, ATTWATER, Effield, Age 47, Milton, 2a, 524?)
     Buried in Sittingbourne Cemetery

My conclusions & questions:

I suspect that this William ATTWATER is the same person.  On the census data the birth place is the same.  Although there is minor age changes recorded in the census, it only changes by 2 years between 1841 to 1901.

Is there any way of proving this is the same William?
Will a marriage certificate state that this is his second marriage (to Agnes)?
Is Frances possibly a middle name for Agnes?
Or was Agnes possibly married before?

Any help is greatly appreciated.  What are your thoughts?   :-\

Kent / My Elusive Sophia
« on: Sunday 24 October 04 21:31 BST (UK)  »
I seem to have a great great great grandmother that just likes to hide.  Every time I find something new about her, her name is spelled differently.  To top things off, she seemed to move around a lot.  I think I have struck the top of my family tree as I can't seem to find where she was born.  If anyone can help, I would appreciate your insite or any lookups in the future places I will mention.  If she is not found, I can at least mark off any places that you may search for me.

This is what I know:

Born about 1784 (1851 Census)
Birth Location stated as Borden, Kent but searched by the Sittingbourne Library and no birth found.
1804 - Had a son named Marshal Atwater in Borden, Kent
1806 - Married George GOODWIN in Rainham, Kent - April 21, 1806 (Surname spelled Hatwater)
1807 - Rainham, Kent
1810 - Chatham, Kent
1813 - Chatham, Kent
1815 - Gillingham, Kent
1818 - Gillingham, Kent
1821 - Chatham, Kent
1825 - Cuxton, Kent
1827 - Milton Regis, Kent
1841 - Sittingbourne, Kent
Died April 13, 1851 - Sittingbourne, Kent

Sophia must have been born in the Milton or Medway area as she seems to have stuck around the area.  Spelling variations for the surname are too numerous to list.  If it sounds anything like ATWATER, it probably is one.  Variations of WATER and WALTERS are also offshoots of the surname.

The only possible birth entry that I have been able to find is located in Rodmersham:  1784, 02/29 - Sophia Daughter of WALTERS, Mary.  No father listed.  Go figure. :'(  And February 29th  ???  My luck! (This came from a KFHS CD so I have not looked at an actual entry)

Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thank you.   ;)

Cork / Cronin - Ireland to Canada
« on: Sunday 24 October 04 20:22 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for any possible information on my Cronin family to be able to link back to Ireland.  This is all I know:  My grandfather was John Emmett Cronin.  His birth date was listed on an old Canadian passport as February 27, 1893 and was born in Peterborough, Canada.  He lived in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada later in his life and married Mary Lillian Clancy in around the 1920's.  Mary was born in Peterborough, Ontario also.  John's father is listed as Thomas Cronin on the next of kin line on his WW1 papers.  It does not say if Thomas was born in Ireland but I suspect so.  Family rumours say the family came from Cork Ireland.

Does anyone know how I can possibly get my first stepping stone into finding out more about my Cronin branch of my tree? ???  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Kent / Re: Tonbridge / Tunbridge
« on: Sunday 24 October 04 18:42 BST (UK)  »
Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells are two Parishes within the Tunbridge Registration district.  Tunbridge Wells is best described as a "city within Tonbridge" as it is located in the lower middle area of the Parish of Tonbridge.  Tonbridge is sometimes referred to as Tunbridge which later became the accepted spelling of the Registration District.

From what you have described, your ancestors lived in  the Parish of Tunbridge Wells which was part of Tonbridge/Tunbridge Registration district.
