World War Two / Re: My Grandad
« on: Monday 18 June 12 13:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi Again,

Looks like only 2nd Wiltshire Regiment were part of BEF - Deployed to Cherbourg 14th Sept '39. They went on into Belgium & were evacuated from Dunkirk 1st/2nd June 1940 arriving back in UK at Ramsgate, then on to Rhyl by train:

War diaries available here:

http://www.thewardrobe.org.uk/research/war-diaries/search/regiment:27/year:1939

(Use "Search Again" to see other years)

Again, hope this helps.
Matt T.

It's unlikley he was a POW from as early as 1939. War was declaired on 3rd Sept '39 and the British Expeditionary Force was sent to France/Belgium mid September but hostilities did not occur until 10th May 1940.

If he was a POW from early on, he may have been part of the BEF and one of the 198,229 men captured before Dunkirk (26th May - 4 June 1940).

Hope this helps,
Matt T.

Hi Annie, glad to help.

I don't think this can be the same person. I'm no expert, but I'm sure this style of photo (the pose and the back-drop) is much older, possibly even late C19th.

You might be best posting it on the Armed Forces Board, someone may be able to identify the uniform. Personally, I have a feeling the uniform may be Australian, I'm sure I've seen similar shoulder flashes somewhere before.

Hope this helps,
Matt T.

Having looked at pictures of HMS Gossamer which is also an Halcyon Class Minesweeper, same as the 1938 HMS Seagull, I am convinced it is this later ship.

I would suggest it is 1950 or 1956 with the top of the "5" stretched out?

Kind regards,
Matt T.

I'm also not sure about the date, admittedly it does look like 191  then possibly "7" but also followed by another possible "0"?

"Wiki" has an "HMS Seagull" - Sharpshooter Class Torpedo Gunboat, built Chatham Dockyard 31st May 1889, Converted to a minesweeper in 1909. Sunk in a collision in the Firth of Clyde on 30 September 1918.

The thing the guy is leaning on appears to be a torpedo, so could it be pre 1909?

Kind Regards,
Matt T.

Heraldry Crests and Coats of Arms / Re: Crest

The Motto "Invitum Sequitur Honors" (Honour follows him that does not seek it) is used by a number of peers, including:

Marquess of Donogall: http://www.cracroftspeerage.co.uk/online/content/index355.htm

Baron Templemore: http://www.cracroftspeerage.co.uk/online/content/index1167.htm

Baron O'Neill: http://www.cracroftspeerage.co.uk/online/content/index1091.htm

Although the Coat of Arms you describe dosn't sound like any of these.

Matt T.
