I think it may be a Dove. There are plenty of examples of this bird featuring just in the Crest rather than the Coat of Arms.

This one belonging to Robert Barkley bears a striking resemblence:

Thanks for the info larkspur, much appreciated.

I think I'm going to have to re-visit my notes on this branch as I can't remember where I got Sarah's surname  ???, but it looks like I may have it wrong and she may be the BAILEY you found.

If so, and she is the daughter of John & Ann, it's a good possibility that the John BAILEY in Gamston 1821 is the family - That would all fit.

Thanks again. I'll start a new topic when I've found my notes, rather than highjacking this one any more. :)

Kind Regards,
Matt T.

Ok, Thanks for looking.

Could I trouble you to see if there are any FLETCHERs listed?

I think that is the Gamston I'm interested in - close to East Retford.

William PARKIN (b.1791 Babworth) married Sarah FLETCHER (b.1791 Retford) in 1816 at East Retford.

They are at Gamston Wood in 1851, I assumed it to be a farm owned by the PARKINs but it just occured to me it could be the FLETCHERs that originate from here?

Thanks again,
Matt T.

Hi Larkspur,

Sorry for hijacking this thread, but would you mind looking to see if any households for TOMLINSON or PARKIN are listed in the 1821 for Gamston please?

Kind Regards,

Hi Nick,

Have you seen this topic:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,38351.msg150090.html#msg150090

The first post gives this link:

http://www.royalpioneercorps.co.uk/rpc/history_lancastria.htm

Cpl. H Pattinson, M.M. appears in the list of 'residents' of the British War Cemetery, Escoublac - La Baule, Brittany on that site.

Hope this helps,

Matt T.

Just for information, quotes from "Wisbech and the Fenlands" website:

"Wisbech is the capital of the English Fens and the town itself sits on both sides of the river Nene, which forms the border between the counties of Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. Nine miles north on the western bank of the river Nene is the border between the counties of Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire."

"To do genealogy research for the Wisbech region, you may find that you may have to check the genealogical records for three different counties. They are Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Lincolnshire. There are differences in the way the original genealogical records were recorded for each County. In this present day, there are differences in the way the genealogical records can be found, either being through the various Public Record Offices, Genealogical Societies, or Genealogical Web-sites."

Great picture BTW. Wish I had some like that of any of my relies.

Matt T.

Could it possibly be "Sam"? First letter looks similar to other "S" in the document.

Whether he was specifically at Tobruk it's impossible to say from the medals alone.

Neil1821 beat me to it. Was going to say exactly that but would add this quote from 'Wiki':

Africa Star: "Members of the Australian Imperial Force qualified for the Star for service in Syria from 8 June 1941 and 11 July 1941."

More info on all 5 medals here:
