Canada Lookup Requests Completed / Re: William Nelson Brown
« on: Sunday 17 December 06 20:30 GMT (UK)  »
 ;) Hi J.J. ~
Thank you for the surprise reply...
Due to the great help I received on this site before, I had already come across these references.       There are still some curious discrepancies, but I guess that's down to  confusion over two families, and/or error in transcribing at some stage.       More recently, I came across a distant relative (on another branch) in Australia....who happened to have some info about the Brown side BEFORE they emigrated to Canada...... which filled-in  two  more relevant  gaps in my tree, and I could give him a couple of items he didn't have before.
Great when that happens, isn't it !
Keep hunting !  Thanks again, and Happy Christmas !.

Meath / Re: James Hannon, Maria Giles, Ellen Scanlon
« on: Saturday 23 September 06 19:52 BST (UK)  »
Go to 'Irish Resources' (on Rootschat)
then  down to Griffith Valuation,
then  click 'all records for one county' (Meath),
then  Kells......

Headfort Place and John Street addresses are the same building  -  its at the junction.  'Townparks ' simply means it was within the townland of Kells.
The other references are probably buildings/land owned by the same Thomas.

The Meath Heritage Centre   (Mill St.,  Trim ,  Co. Meath)  has the church records for RC and C.of I., but they're not cheap for information (nor always accurate).   If you have fairly accurate dates, it might be  better  trying the actual parish registers, in the parish...?

Only just noticed this.  The name Hannon can be found in the records for Kells, Co. Meath (Griffith Valuation, 1850s),  and there was a "Hannon's Hotel" in the town around 1800 (building later became a Masonic Hall, and is now a Credit Union). If they were RC they may appear in the RC church records (from 1791); or Protestant, in the C. of I.  records, from the 1770s. I think I saw a Hannon gravestone  in the C.of I.  churchyard....would have to check.

Ireland / Re: O'Hara - not sure where to start
« on: Sunday 26 March 06 21:13 BST (UK)  »
Not much help, but I noticed your posting because I have  both a Patrick O'Hara, and an O'Neill, among my lot  --  distant cousins, by marriage. They were both located in the Co. Carlow/Laois area.     Both of these surnames are fairly common throughout Ireland, so you would really need some other item of info, to get started.   Your ancestors probably went to Scotland for the simple reason of looking for work , like so many others!   In the past, there was a regular movement of workers(seasonal) between the northern parts of Ireland and Scotland, so there's   a possibility of some connection there.
                          Best of luck.

Ireland / Re: Lughana/Subhana???
« on: Tuesday 31 January 06 22:00 GMT (UK)  »
I've looked through the 'postal towns' of Ireland, in Irish, and can't see anything  to match your mysterious location, so far. It's quite likely that it's  just a "townland" name -- very localised, and therefore much harder to pin down.     I see that  someone  even  suggested 'Lughnasa as in the play'  .......  I'm afraid that would be a waste of time :  'Lśnasa' is not a place  -  it's the Irish name for August.  If you're sure of the county, it might be worth  checking  for something in the county/local  libraries.

Have you tried variations....such as Liggett............this name appears among some distant relatives of mine, in  Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland.

Ireland / Re: Heffernan Family
« on: Friday 27 January 06 23:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Karen ~
I did notice your 'Heffernan' reference some months back, when you helped me out with my 'Nelson Brown', but I don't have any real information to pass on, except for the comment that there is no shortage of Heffernans in the country.    Most of them appear to be/have been in the southern half of the country.           I actually have a  a third or fourth cousin  married to a John Heffernan who, I think, is from Co. Kilkenny : however, I don't have an address for them at present...somewhere in Waterford.
Coincidentally, I also have an English cousin married to a 'Dyer', in Surrey.  Again, I have no current address. If/when I find anything re  these names, I know where to post it !
                          Regards.....Mike.

Ireland / Re: Rooney's Beware - I'm After You
« on: Wednesday 25 January 06 23:34 GMT (UK)  »
Just a comment re 'Rooneys'(Half Pint) : the general trend seems to be that there is a Northern Ireland connection here.... but  in fact the name Rooney is not  UNcommon anywhere in Ireland. Perhaps a quick skim through the IGI for other counties might turn up something useful.   Some years ago I met a chap called  Rooney in Liverpool,  IN the Mormon library, looking for  his Irish connections...something to do with Drogheda, Co. Louth. Hope you find something positive.
                                    Mike.
