Shipping and Mercantile Gazette, 12 August 1853 -

"Sunderland: August 10
Died of cholera, after a short illness, on the 28th June, at Wisby, in Gothland, having put in there on his passage from Cronstadt, Captain John Newman, of Sunderland, aged 50, master of the brig Chieftan, of Hartlepool."

Also, Ancestry has John's Masters & Mates certificate, on which he states his date of birth, 22 July 1800 at Lynne Regis.

Hi Lensmeister

Here's Rebecca's baptism, Kings Lynn, January 1810

Curious as to why she was baptised under the name Watson after her mother had remarried

Norfolk / Re: Mary Ann Ransom m Joseph Watts. Cressingham 1817
« on: Thursday 05 April 18 11:20 BST (UK)  »
Hello again Hookleg,

I'm afraid I'm confused with this family.

As I said, I couldn't find a marriage for Mary Ann and Robert Flatt

Decided to look at the 1841/1851 census, but couldn't find this couple.

I did, however, find Mary Ann Watts, living in Little Cressingham in both censuses.
Married to a John Watts, who was a gardener.

Mary Ann's birthplace is shown as Griston on the 1851 - which is four miles from Cressingham.

Searched for Mary Ann's born Griston around 1793, and found one - Mary Ann Ransom  !!

Hello,

Unfortunately, few parish registers survive from Little Cressingham for the dates you're looking at.
There are some Bishops Transcripts though.

Found a burial for Joseph Watts at Little Cressingham, 11 November 1832, aged 49

On FindMyPast, there are banns for a Robert Flatt, single man, and Mary Ann Watts, widow, both of Little Cressingham - banns dates are May 24, May 21 and June 7, 1835.

Can't find a marriage though

Norfolk / Re: Looking for Rose Middleton (1760ish - 1835)

Hello,

Like you, I couldn't find a baptism for Rose.
Looked at the parish registers, archdeacons transcripts and bishops transcripts for Heydon.

On each one, there are various gaps.

You've probably seen there was a William and Mary Middleton baptising children around that time in Heydon.

The Norfolk Records Office has a Will for a William Middleton who died at Heydon in 1790, which is also viewable on the Family Search site.  (but requires a log-in to their site)

I have had a look at the Will.

William mentions his wife Mary, and children Thomas and Ann - but not Rose.

However, the executor, and a beneficiary, is a John Owens.

Hello,

The Robert Pitcher buried at South Lopham in April 1877 was only 7 years old.

Link to South Lopham register, though I'm not sure it will work unless you are logged in to Family Search.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Unidentified country house

Another photograph of Arthur Polhill here (4th row down at the end)

I think the lady must be Agnes Augusta, his second wife.
There is an obvious age difference.

The three young men behind are probably his sons by his first wife.

So personally, I don't think Agnes Augusta is the "mystery woman" in the album photos.

Found this site, which looks interesting, but a lot of it is private.
There is a contact email at the bottom of the page which you could perhaps try noytd.

The fourth photo is outside Howbury Hall, of an old lady I take to be Emily Polhill, with her two sons, Cecil and Arthur, and their wives.

I agree with Carol - your wedding photo is Edwardian.
The couples in the photo on the website are wearing Edwardian dress, but are much older than the people in your photo.

Thanks all

‘Twas the “Family Crest” that clinched it.

I thought the animal above the coronet looked like a hind, so googled “Mural Crown +Hind” and came up with this
http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/19/238.htm
Pretty similar.

Bit of searching on the Polhill family and eventually found this –

Luckily, the caption said the family lived at Howbury Hall, of which there is a fair bit of info.
