Ireland / Where do I begin?
« on: Thursday 19 October 06 11:44 BST (UK)  »
My husband has Irish ancestry and is interested in finding out more, I've traced his ancesters as far as I can from when the arrived in England, but for two lines they only list their place of birth as Ireland on the census.
One of the names is McGrath (yes, I know a very common name), and my husband believes they were from the Sligo area, although I have no proof to back this up.
The other name is Farkins, a very unusual name, but we have no idea which part of Ireland this may orginate from.
Does anyone have any tips on how I could find out more for him?  We are particularly intrigued by the Farkins name.

Armed Forces / London Auxiliary Fire Service Records
« on: Tuesday 16 May 06 08:10 BST (UK)  »
During WWII my father served as a fireman with the auxiliary fire service in London, and later he was involved with D-Day. He landed on D-Day and fought for over three weeks before being wounded.

Over the years, generally each Remembrance Sunday, I recall him saying that he never received any medals. We all thought it was strange, but never really thought much more about it.

As part of my family history research I decided to try and find out some more about the auxiliary fire service and D-Day, and found an interesting fact on the Veterans Agency website - that medals had to be claimed after WWII, they were not issued automatically.

As I read this I realised that my father must never have known he needed to claim his medals and that they were still there waiting. I wrote down all the details of how to make a claim and passed them on to my mum (as she would be the one who would have to make the claim as next of kin). After filling in many forms and a long wait, my mum received a letter of confirmation that my father's medals had indeed never been issued, he was owed a 1939-1940 Star and a France and Germany Star, which are now being prepared for dispatch.

The letter also mentioned that he would be owed a Defence Medal for his time in the auxiliary fire service, but that we would need to provide documentation. My question is this: are there any records for the auxiliary fire service and where would I find them?

I do all of my research online as I live in the middle of the countryside, and haven't been able to find anything out about these records. Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to do a census lookup for me please? I am searching for Mary Jane, her surname has been spelt Sherston/Shearstone/Sherstone on various documents.

She was born c.1836 in Limington, Somerset. Her fathers name was William and he was a labourer.

Mary Jane married in 1856 and her residence is listed as Marston Magna at that time. There is an Ellen Sherstone listed as a witness on her marriage certificate who may be her sister.

Many thanks.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Islington Marriage Request
« on: Thursday 02 February 06 11:47 GMT (UK)  »
hi, I don't know if anyone would be able to help me with this.  I'm searching for the marriage of my g-grandparents Cordelia Emma Tyler nee Webb and John Curtis Hare.  After much searching I have only found one entry anywhere near matching:

Cordelia Emma Taylor, Islington, Jun 1887, vol 1b, p 342

I have checked the indexes on Ancestry, but there's no corresponding entry for John Curtis Hare. I wondered if his name has been mis-spelt too and  I looked on freeBMD but there are no other names listed on the same page as Cordelia.

Is there any way someone could tell me the other names listed on that page?

Thanks.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / marriage search
« on: Friday 27 May 05 09:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I wonder if anyone could help me please?
I'm looking for the marriage of Edward David Hicks and Agnes (maiden name unknown).  At the time of the 1871 census Edward is with his wife Emma living at St George in the East, I think Emma died in 1875.  By the 1881 census Edward is married to Agnes, and living at 21 Halifax Street in London.
I've had a look on freebmd and found a marriage listed for an Edward Hicks, in Shoreditch, Jun qtr 1880, vol 1c p254, and think this might be it but there is another man listed and only one woman - an Eliza Collins.  Is there anyway I can check who the other woman is, bearing in mind I don't know Agnes' maiden name?
Many thanks, lilirose

Hi, I'd be grateful for a lookup for John Whall on the 1851 census, he is probably in the Bow area.  He is 20 years old, single and working as a carpenter, born Shadwell Middx.  I have conflicting information as to his father's name, so am hoping to find him still living at home with his family.
Hope someone can help, thanks, lilirose

Hi,  I'd be grateful for a lookup on the 1841 and/or 1851 census for the following family (in both instances they should be resident at Rev. Clissold's Lodge, Church Street/Row, Stoke Newington), here are the details I already have:

1871 census - Park Street, Stoke Newington
Thomas Jones, 69, retired coachman, born Aston on Clun Shropshire, head of household
Mary Jones, 64, born Leominster, wife
Thomas E. Jones, 29, certificated schoolmaster, born Stoke Newington, son
Mary Jones, 25, born London, daughter

1861 census - Lodge, Church Row, Stoke Newington
Thomas Jones, 57, coachman/domestic servant, born Aston on Clun Shropshire, head of household
Mary Jones, 54, born Leominster, wife
Thomas Edward Jones, 19, pupil teacher, born Stoke Newington
Mary Jones, 15, kitchen maid, born Chelsea

Thomas Edward Jones born 27 Mar 1842 at Rev. Mr Clissold's Lodge, Church Street, Stoke Newington
mother: Mary Jones formerly Ward
father: Thomas Jones, coachman

family lore says that Mary was the housekeeper for Rev. Augustus Clissold, and as we can see from these census returns, Thomas was coachman.

Hope someone can help, many thanks,
lilirose
