Armed Forces / Re: 55th Regiment of Infantry approx 1867

Great - I have already sent an email off to them.

You didn't do anything wrong, just better to write out email addresses in words, so that it doesn't become a link that spammers can abuse :)  No worries at all, and I am very grateful for your help.  Thank you so much for taking the time to post what you have.  Keep your fingers crossed for me :)

Regarding the discharge papers - my soldier won't have any I think, as he died in action I believe, in India, so he was never actually discharged.  But maybe I have that wrong.  (I hope so!)

Hi mariob, thank you very much for your post.

Going on your suggestion that he may have enlisted as Henry Hilsden, I found a record on Ancestry for a Henry Hilsden, giving a regimental number as 907 (of the 55th, and based in India) Would this be enough to pass on to the email address you kindly gave me?  (you may want to re-edit your post, and put spaces between the email address to help the site combat spam, otherwise a moderator may delete the email address)

Sadly, he didn't travel out to India with any family, and as he died there, I won't get any discharge papers.  I had hoped there may be service records somewhere, so will keep hoping!  :)

Thank you again for your help, and I will contact that email, and see if they can help me.

Maybe if you took close up scans of the ribbons, or of just his uniform.  But if I were you, I would post in the military section, under WW1, and see if anyone there can help. :)

Hiya :)
On the banks of a river maybe?
And could the man be her son?  Ie, they are all her children?

Cheers - DaisyLoo

Added: 3 girls in white - 2 boys at the front, possibly a boy being held by the man, not sure about the baby on the woman's lap, or the baby with their back to the picture, is they are part of the family. - They are my guesses :D

Thanks - any ideas as to when the second one was taken...also what kind of photos were they?  It looks like they were drawn on after with ink or something Cheers :)

This is another picture, of Pat Conroy's mother, Ellen Conroy, born in 1848.

Hi there

I have been given copies of two pictures - the originals are on card, and are a raised dome shape, so extremely hard to scan or copy. I only have a copy of the original, which I have then scanned.

This couple is Pat & Bridget Conroy, and they are on the 1901 & 1911 census in Ireland and both were born approximately in 1871.

I am really interested, in trying to date these photos and also in knowing what these kind of photos were.  Thanks in advance of any help :)

Thanks Greensleeves :D As is usual with family history, I am now left with even more questions.  I wasn't aware that this man owned a pot, let alone rooms and houses!  There are loads more of these records, hopefully now I'll have a better idea of what they say.

Thanks again :)

Ireland / Petty Sessions, Ireland
« on: Friday 05 July 13 22:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

My ancestor Alexander McMinn appears to have lived in Clonmel from the early 1850's until around 1870.  On the majority of his children's baptism records, his address was the Clonmel Barracks, in Tipperary.  I have just come across some petty session records...there are quite a few, ranging across the 1860's, where McMinn is the complainant trying to regain possession of house/room etc

I don't really understand this, I wasn't aware that he even owned property?  How can I find out more about this?  He was a soldier in the RA, and he died in 1878 in the UK in Woolwich.

I have a few of the petty sessions on the deciphering board, as I couldn't make out some of the words.  That thread is here: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,652942.0.html

Thanks in advance :)
