Glamorganshire / Re: Address in Llandaff in 1939

I think it might be Petherton Lodge, Llantrisant Road.  There was certainly a Petherton House - quite a big house - so it makes sense that there might be a lodge for it.  Sadly neither building exists any longer.  (Not far from where I live.)

Lovely pic to have, Romilly.  No, he was born about 1897 so too young to have had the shop in WW1.  In any case, he was a sailor from Georgia and came to live in the UK when he jumped ship in Hull (on the advice of his captain) in 1917 because the revolution had started in Russia.  He couldn't speak English then, but made a living going door-to-door selling clothing from a suitcase.  Then he married my great-aunt in 1930, and I think his first shop (naval outfitters) was opened in Bridge St, St. Thomas, around that time.  Don't know when he moved to Wind St but 1946 telephone directory has him there (no. 31).   The shop was still running when he died in 1960.  I was only 9 then, so memories are hazy, and, of course, there's no-one left to get more details!

That's a pretty building, Romilly, and I can well imagine it as an old-fashioned ironmonger's.  My great-uncle (by marriage) was Jack Gainswell and he had a naval/gents outfitter's shop at the bottom of Wind Street, which is on that website.  I have vague memories of his window displays of dress uniforms with gold buttons and gold epaulettes.

Thank you, Romilly.  Quite a few photos of interest to me, including my father's old school and my great-uncle's shop.  Feeling quite nostalgic now!

Hi.  There is a place called West Curthwaite (found it by reading the entry as West Curt.... and googling that bit.)  The entry you can't read may be an abbreviation of that?

Thank you, Bookbox.  I did try to find my query on that board (i.e. posted by someone else with the same problem) but didn't actually ask the question myself.  It does seem the sensible thing to do - will do it tomorrow.  Thanks for your suggestion.

Hi, all.
I'm hoping there is a simple explanation for my problem - there probably is as I'm not very hi-tech-minded and most of you will be cleverer than I am on these things!  I have FH3 (since 2006-ish) and it's been fine for what I want.  However, in the last couple of weeks I haven't been able to open the property dialog boxes. I don't recall doing anything to change things.   I click on the icon and nothing happens.  It's beginning to irritate, especially as I have quite a bit of stuff to record on various individuals, not least my lovely grandad's WW1 records.

Hoping someone out there has this program and can help.

Hi, Tracy

Sorry to have been so long coming back to you, (real life keeping me too busy) but I see that you have received excellent help (MUCH better than I could have done!) from other people so I'll step back.  I had been looking at old maps and had also come to the conclusion that it was well into the 20th century when Sherwood was built, but Sylvia has already confirmed that for you.  I'll leave you to it now - and good luck with your research.

Regards, Gill

Hi.  Tyr Winch Road is in Old St. Mellons, on the outskirts of Cardiff.  I googled Sherwood, Tyr Winch Road and got some estate agent's details of a modern house at that address.  I'm wondering if the original Sherwood was demolished and a new house built on the land.  Not what you want to hear, I know, but I think it's definitely the location.   If it was a guest house in its original form, there could possibly be something in old directories?  I'll have a look and let you know if I find anything.
Good luck.
Gill
