I would appreciate help with the following, if anyone has access to either the 1851 or 1861 Surrey Censuses.

Frederick George Egan (upholsterer), the son of James Egan (builder), married Elizabeth Steel, the daughter of John Steel (corn dealer) in 1858.  Both bride and groom were living in Wellington Place, Newington at the time.  Is there any sign of them in either the Census before they married or the one afterwards?

Many thanks in advance, Emma

Shropshire / Re: CLEOBURY / OSWELL of Broseley / Astley Abbott

Thank you for your response and for the advice about the web site and the history society.  No, I haven't been to Broseley but am hoping to visit next month on my way up to North Wales, combining that with a trip to Wentnor, where I have discovered other ancestors.  I am also hoping to see Astley Abbots, where Thomas Cleobury and his bride were living when he was married in 1842.  Thank you so much for the offer help, too.  I was wondering whether there were any Cleoburys mentioned in the church - e.g., in the graveyard or perhaps on the war memorial, so if you see anything that might be relevant I'd be grateful to learn of it.  I'm looking forward to seeing the place for myself.  All best, Emma

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: DUCK END
« on: Saturday 06 November 04 15:36 GMT (UK)  »
One of the families I'm researching lived in Duck End.  In the 1871 Census, Joseph and Sophia Levitt, both in their 70s, are listed there.  If this rings any bells with anyone, I'd be grateful to hear from them.  I occasionally stay with a friend in Finchingfield, so I'll try to remember to take a photograph of Duck End next time I'm there!

Berkshire / CHEESEMAN, HUSSEY & MONGER of Beenham & West Isley
« on: Saturday 06 November 04 15:28 GMT (UK)  »
I have traced the CHEESEMAN (or CHEESMAN) family of BEENHAM back to the 1790s.  I believe they came from WEST ILSLEY prior to that and have got as far back as a Daniel Cheesman of West Ilsley who died in 1779 and whose son Richard Cheeseman (1751-1824) married Ann HUSSEY in Beenham in 1790.  His sons married into the MONGER family and the FROUD family and one of the Cheeseman descendents, Sergeant Edward Enoch Cheeseman of the 39th Co. Imperial Yeomanry, is recorded in Beenham parish church as having died at Mafeking in 1901.  Does this tie in with anyone else's research?

Kent / CHEESEMAN / VERRALL in Rusthall
« on: Thursday 04 November 04 12:20 GMT (UK)  »
I have a great great grandfather called Charles Lot Cheeseman (b. 1839), a coachman/groom who lived in Rusthall and married (1) Emma HAMLYN from Paddington in 1864 and, after her death, Clara VERRALL also from Rusthall in 1871, the daughter of Henry VERRALL, labourer.  Charles Lot's father was Charles CHEESEMAN, labourer.  Charles Lot's son was also a Charles Lot (b.1867), a butler to the Marquis of Sygo and later steward to Hoare's Bank in London, who in 1895 married Emily Louisa PIKE, daughter of Henry Pike (gardener) and Louisa, nee PLANK of Norwood in Surrey.  Charles and Emily's son was Charles Henry (known as Don) Cheeseman (b. 1899), my grandfather, who was principal double bass player in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.  Does this tie into anyone else's research?

Montgomeryshire / DISLEY of Berriew
« on: Thursday 04 November 04 09:40 GMT (UK)  »
My great great grandfather was John Disley (b. 1845) of Berriew who married Susannah Jones from Wentnor in Shropshire.  John's father was James Disley (b. 1814) who married Mary Woods, also of Berriew, daughter of Richard Woods, a weaver.  James was the son of James Disley (1773-1848)and Martha (1784-1859).  Does anyone have any more information about the Disleys of Berriew?

Shropshire / CLEOBURY / OSWELL of Broseley / Astley Abbott
« on: Wednesday 03 November 04 18:19 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Thomas CLEOBURY  born 1818 in Broseley, the son of (indeciperable but looks like) Sharden(???) and Harriet CLEOBURY.  He married Mary OSWELL in Astley Abbotts in 1842 and had lots of children (Ann 1842, Mary 1844, Thomas 1846, Amelia 1847, Harriet 1850, Emma 1851, William 1861 - and others, probably).  In the 1851 Census they are living in Broseley.  Thomas was a potter / mould maker and his father a miner, while quite a lot of the other family members were involved in the iron/china clay industry.  Does this tie in with anyone's research?

« on: Wednesday 03 November 04 18:04 GMT (UK)  »
I have a William Frederick STACE (b. c1824) who married Sarah WOODCOCK (a servant) in Bishops Stortford in 1844.  He was a tanner at that time, but by the time of his son Arthur Henry STACE's birth in 1847, he was describing himself as a groom and by 1868 he had become a gardener.  They lived in Hadham Road, Bishops Stortford.  Does this tie in with anyone's research?
