Cornwall Lookup Requests / Re: Rowe
« on: Tuesday 02 December 08 19:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi lizdb

thank you for the info.

1881 Census on Scotlands People, George Rowe (Printer born England). George had moved to Greenock with his wife and family, where they had another child born. When Georges wife Elizabeth Ann Hall died, he remarried and he and his second wife had a child.

Fanny Rowe, George's daughter married a Greenock man, Edward McCafferty and so began a branch of my wifes tree. (McCafferty my wife's maiden name)

I put a post on the Devon look ups and along with information from a relative received this.

1871 Census living at Wolborough Newton Abbot
George Rowe (Printer) b Wilcove Cornwall
Elizabeth A    b Stonehouse Devon
2 children listed as b Plymouth
Fanny Rowe b Newton Abbot

from a relative, who had looked at marraige certificate, gave George Rowe's parents as William Rowe and Jane Rowe (nee Broad) cannot be sure Broad, very difficult to make out writing,

so do you agree that his parents are born Cornwall Circa 1820?

From your post George is listed as b Cornwall Antony not Wilcove, is that a different Parish, village?

Once again thanks I am sure I am on the right track

Tommy :)

Cornwall Lookup Requests / ROWE - Wilcove
« on: Tuesday 02 December 08 16:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

one of my wife's great great grandfathers was born in Wilcove Cornwall in 1844 (later documents have his occupation as Printer) he married Elizabeth Ann Hall in Plymouth 1866. Sometime after the mid 1870's he moved with his wife and family to Renfrewshire Scotland.

As far as we know George Rowe's father was William Rowe and his mother Jane Rowe (nee Broad??)

Any information on William and or Jane would be welcome

thanks in anticipation

Hi Monica

sorry for the delay in replying. I had a look at my gran and grandfathers marraige certificate. The only additional information noted is that Thomas Clarke Occupation General Labourer. The witnesses to the marraige are Joseph- Johnstone Mitchell. Blacksmith and Margaret Hamilton. I do not know for sure if my grandfather Thomas Clarke servied in 1stWW although it was thought he served in a Yorkshire Regiment (of which there were a number in that era)
Sorry can't be of more help.

Looks like a dead end again

kind regards
Tommy

Hi Monica

once again can I thank you for all the information, hopefully I have it all in order and added to my tree.
This may seem I am going off in a tangent but please bear with me.

I have come to a brick wall with this one which I have been trying to resolve for years.

My grand father Thomas Clarke born 1890 (do not know where) died 1979 Greenock. He married my gran (Helen Duncan Hamilton) in Glasgow 1918, I have a copy of their marraige cert.

My mum and uncle, both now in their 80's, do not know where their father was born but are of the opinion England, possibly Yorkshire. I remember my grandad, I was 16 when he died, and thought he spoke with a northern English accent. I tried searching the English Census but there are loads of Thomas Clarke's. I did a search on SP on the 1901 census, if he was in Scotland then, he would have been 9 or 10, with no luck. The only other information I have from his marraige cert is that his father was William Clarke (Milk Salesman) deceased and mother Elizabeth Beaumont (deceased)

any suggestions?

Hi,,
still keen on any help that can be given re my maternal grand father Thomas Clarke (only info I have noted above). On the Scottish death certificate it will name place of birth, however, that will only apply if the person registering the death knows that. I believe it only states England.

His marraige cerificate only names his parents and occupation.
