Sandra,
thank you for your reply. I had completely forgotten that I had posted on this subject before, your link referring to my previous and your mention of Tait and Brass has confirmed much.

Hi, one of my great grandmothers was born in Orphir Orkney 1850. She died in Greenock 1904

Her father was John Bews (Seaman) born 1819 Stenness and her mother Eliza Wishart Tait born 1824
they married in Firth and Stenness 1849'

I have a lot of names for Eliza Bews siblings, however, I am not sure how accurate they are.

Can anyone provide more information on my great grand mothers family?

kind regards
Tommy

Hi seaweed,

thanks for the info. I see my uncle Ralph (the photo subject) has medal ribbons on his uniform, so I assume he served during the 2nd WW.  :)

He was born in Greenock, Renfrewshire. His surname Clarke was his stepfahers name. (at birth he may have been registered as Cairns or Hamilton).

Looks like this photo was taken October 1953, by the calender.

Hi, I have attached a rather poor quality sorry of my Uncle Ralph Clarke, 1914-1996.

Is this a uniform of the Royal or Merchant navy? What do the insignia on the sleeve signify?

My mother (now 88) says her brother was on a ship torpedoed at Scapa Flow??

Apart from that I have no info.

Look forward to any replies

Yes rosie17,

I thought at long last I was on the track of Thomas Clarke  ::)

grandfather Tommy Clarke is a difficult man to find out anything about, I have been trying for ages! Only two of his children survive, my mum aged 87 and my Uncle aged 90, neither of whom know of their fathers background, however, they only thought he was from Leeds.

Thomas Clarke is not an uncommon name, so difficult to narrow down

Death Cert only shows date, place, reporter, cause and spouse.

thanks for your help

Hi rosie17, Willsy,

I think this is not my Thomas, clearly cannot be sure  :-\
It seems the focus from your replies are on the name Beaumont.
My Thomas Clarke has noted his father as William Clarke and his mother as Elizabeth Beaumont (Beaumont was, I assume, her own or maiden surname).
Unfortunately I do not know when my Thomas came to live in Scotland, I have searched the 1911 census on Scotlands People and can find nothing there!
Sadly the only information is what I have from my grandparents marriage certificate.

I am pleased to say on my mothers/mothers side I been lucky in my research getting records back in to the late 17th century in the Orkney Isles. Similarly my fathers side mainly from Ireland.

Thanks for your help, if anything else on Thomas is discovered, please let me know.

kind regards
Tommy

:) rosie17, my Thomas Clarke was born 18-02-1890 although my mother thought her fathers birth year may have been a year out  :-\.

Thank you for your reply, a last I may be on the track of my grandfathers roots

Thank you Rosie17.

The Leeds connection is interesting as my mother (now aged 87), thought her dad was from Leeds??. He was a very quiet man, who it seemed never told his children of his origins, he never mentioned siblings.
If this is my Thomas, I would imagine he did not want to talk about his background.

I assume, from my grandfathers marriage certificate, that his mothers maiden name was Beaumont although you mention alias Clark(e).
Can you clarify this for me please.
kind regards
Tommy
