The Common Room / Research
« on: Saturday 12 September 09 19:45 BST (UK)  »
Whilst completing my family research, I have come across other items which may be of interest to other people/members.   I have kept this information on SP just in case it turns out to be connected to any members of my extended family.  But if it could be of use, considering copy-right etc. Can I make a note of it here if it is not an exact copy and if the answer is yes, where is the best place to lay this information out.

2)On doing some research recently I found Margaret Duncans' parents James Duncan (Mason) and his wife Agnes Sandilands.  So I checked the births, they had two children called Margaret one born in 1826 the other born in 1828 so I am baffled as to which Margaret, Hamilton Brown, my Grandads 'Gr Uncle married as they do not have their ages noted on the marriage certificates prior to 1855 and rarely show any witnesses being present, just the congregation.

Ireland / Areas which relate to names

Actually this is a question.  Where would you consider the origins in Ireland of the name O'May are they most likely to be Catholic or Anglican.  Are they more likely to be Northern Ireland or South and where did the Orange marches start.  Can anyone tell me please....

When Agnes Kirkwood Smith died in 1911 six months approx. before my nan was born is said that she died of senility and Bronchitis and that Alexander Smith her son was there.  It also stated that the address was 46 Nithsdale Street, which I know was Govan, Pollockshaws.  Although he states it being Strathbungo.
so I have a problem because the names you mention are similar, except that Muriel and Hugh Smith who were children are not mentioned.  Alexander was a Mason by trade.  Janet Mays born in campbelltown is correct and yes they did have a daughter Janet who was my Grgran.  They also had a son John.
Also William Kirkwood was married to Margaret or Maggie Deans.  Found this on Agnes Kirkwoods' birth cert or death cert.  Was not mentioned on her marriage certificate to Muir Smith.  Did not mention the names of either sets of parents.  That it my problem.
I thank you all for your help and suggestions and I will look at the sites you mention to see if they help.  Makes me wonder whether Hugh was named after Muir's father and you are right that they came from Ireland originally.

Don'mean to butt in, I also have Browns in my family tree; both on my grandfathers side and my husbands family maternal side.

My husbands family settled in Portsmouth apparently but origins were Edinburgh.  They had a livery coach and four business.

My Grandads family never really moved away from Leith area of Edinburgh.  I was trying to sort out where Inver? was in relation to Leith.  My memory keeps failing me.  We as a family live in Dorset and my maiden name was Laidlaw before we married.  It was my grandfathers mother Marjory who was a Brown.
Her actual name (and I feel sorry for her) was...Marjory Charles Ferguson Macdonald Brown and she may as well have had Hutchison thrown in which was her mothers maiden name.
I would also be curious to find a connection between the two branches of Browns' relations.

Don't suppose there is a tie up with your Browns.

The Common Room / Churches around Leith

There is a link I have found for churches in Leith which look after the local Parishes of Leith and Edinburgh as follows:
www.leithchurches.co.uk/nlpc.htm

This is for the person looking for details of the family Liversedge?  I was looking for someone who had the same name interests as my own but came across this, then went looking for the church names.  but i know because of relatives in the area that there are a hell of a lot of churches around leith and edinburgh so thought this might be of more help.

Hi, I have a Christine Johnston married to a Hamilton Brown in my family tree on my Grandads side of the family.  South Leith Nr. Edinburgh.  Did your relative have any sisters do you know. This would have been around late 1880/90s.  she died and he re-married an Isabella Bee.  His son by Christine was called Edward Brown.
let me know if you think there is a connection even a tentative one

Muir Smith married an Agnes Kirkwood.  I found their marriage cert.  It mentions that her parents names were William Kirkwood (Land Surveyor) and Margaret Deans Kirkwood.  A census states that she came from Burnt Island.  I cannot find her birth cert or her parents marriage cert or any census information for her parents/herself prior to her marriage to Muir
Smith or for them on burnt island.
Please help......especially if there is something which I am not doing which you know about.
I have checked as thoroughly as I can through all aspects I can think of on Scotspeople but to no avail.

A friend of mine does not currently have a computer, are we allowed to do lookups for non-members? If we are, would it be possible to do a look up for anyone with the name of Rabbitt, Rabitt and also Stokes from Cork.  She is looking for anyone left of her family as her family in England is mostly deceased which is making doing a family tree very difficult.
