It doesn't have to be left unsolved. The answer will be in the French records, just maybe not online.
You need a copy of his second marriage from France, as I said earlier in the thread. These records are not currently online as far as I can tell but you can try to get a copy from the archives.

The second marriage should say if he was divorced, or widowed, and it may even reference the date and location of death for his first wife.

Europe / Re: France - Paul MONTE c1845-1855.

 - I can't see any sign of him in Granville, Manche.  The surname Monte does not appear to be common in this area of France.

Which record do you have that gives his place of origin? There are places like Grandville, Grandvillers, Grandval, etc, in various locations in France.

What was his occupation and that of his father?

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Ruth WILSON 1911-?

Birthdate can be narrowed down to 8th Oct 1911 using the NZ bdm search, which means that I believe this is her:

Suggests she wasn't married, or at least had reverted to her maiden name by 1976.
Possible death in Fiji:

Looks like Alponse was in Mulhouse for his first marriage and listed as resident there when he emigrated.
Unfortunately records beyond 1892 aren't up on the Haut Rhin
http://www.archives.haut-rhin.fr/search/home

If you don't already have it, I would contact the archives in Mulhouse and see if you can acquire a copy of his second marriage record, to see how he is described exactly.

Hi there,

On another of kwaussie's thread some more info has been found about him - he died in England in 1868:

London and Middlesex / Re: where has Caroline Weller got to?

Who were the witnesses at the marriage of Denison and Caroline?
What do you know of Denison's employment between 1871 and 1881 - where was he living in these years?

One possibility is that she died before 1881 but in an unexpected location - visiting family overseas, for example.

I don't see any divorce at https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ but of course they may well have separated informally.

Australia / Re: Alfred Drury - where did he get to?

That he claims to be a widower on remarriage says to me that there was no divorce
https://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/history-genealogy/lh-digital-city-directories.jsp
 - directories might be one way of tracing them through the years

In 1937 he is listed as Albt G, foreman Nellsons, h (house) 638 Dufferin
https://archive.org/details/torontocitydirectory1937/page/n643/mode/2up
Still there in 1938 (note the other Albert, no middle initial, in both of these)
https://archive.org/details/torontocitydirectory1938/page/n651/mode/2up
Not present in 1939
https://archive.org/details/torontocitydirectory1939/page/n613/mode/2up

And further on an Alice Drury, widow of Albert, appears in 1946:
https://archive.org/details/torontocitydirectory1946/page/n573/mode/2up

Struggling to find any concrete records of Alice or Albert moving to the US or Canada (there are various Alice Small/Drury records and various Albert Drury records but none seem to line up with what's been found about them so far)

 - Anna's probate records, including her will in which she leaves everything to her husband.
She owned a house and lot in East Cleveland, and an empty lot in Mentor, Lake Co, Ohio
Towards the end it mentioned she had no children, no siblings.

Might be worth tracing the land records - perhaps she inherited the property, hence why it was in her name and not joint between them.

 - there's one possible marriage here that shows up for a Cyril Cuthbert (about 1931) - you would need an account to see more information.
