Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Witness signature on marriage entry

Many years ago at school I was taught copperplate writing and looking at this I would say from the way the letter is formed that it's an H.

Sussex / Re: Wellers of Hastings/Battle

Wouldn't it be better to post this on the Sussex board rather than the Suffolk one? You're likely to get more people with a knowledge of the area.  I believe if you contact a mod they can move it for you.

Thanks for that PT - seems from evidence so far that we're on the right track then!

Sorry to hear of your illness Gadget, sounds incredibly painful.  Hopefully you recovered fully.

Great link Gadget - that may well be what we're looking for.   Culpepper of course was a herbalist so his references refer to the use of plants in the various treatments, but so far all examples he has given refer to the pelvic area.

I've come across this before with various spellings so I've just checked in my Culpepper's British Herbal.  Says in there that 'the reins' relates to diseases of the kidneys or loins. Note that as spellings in England didn't become fixed until the late 18th century, earlier than that there were no right & wrong ways to spell so you have to expect various versions.

Ive found several references to 'the reins'  in the index, & having checked a few they do all refer to diseases or conditions affecting the kidneys and that general area.

The Common Room / Re: What Did Our Ancestors Do Between The Census Years?
« on: Sunday 05 June 22 21:31 BST (UK)  »
I've always thought trying to track me down as a child might prove difficult if only census returns are relied on.
I was born in Suffolk but the 1951 census would show me in Norfolk.
The 1961 census shows me back in Suffolk.
But in actual fact between 1951 and 1961 I lived in Norfolk, Yorkshire, Huntingdonshire, Cyprus (2 years), Blackpool, Suffolk again, Cambridge & then back to Suffolk.

So when I'm researching I try to bear in mind that people didn't necessarily stay in the same place all the time, even if the ten-yearly view of them might suggest that.

Breconshire / Re: Porthamal Cottage? - Bronllys
« on: Wednesday 06 April 22 22:31 BST (UK)  »
There are two cottages currently occupying the site of what appears on the map to be Porthamel Cottage.  There aree two farms, Great Porthamel and Lower Porthamel and these holdings still exist. Great Porthamel Farm has a v interesting history and used to be the family seat of the Vaughan family.
